A trans runner who outran a 12-year-old girl is speaking out in defense of allowing biological men to compete in women’s sports.

Nathanielle Morin, a transgender runner from Canada, has recently sparked discussions about the participation of trans athletes in women’s sports.

This topic became more prominent after Morin competed in a race where she finished ahead of a 12-year-old girl.

Morin, who identifies as a woman, has openly defended her right to compete in women’s events.

“Trans folks only want to fully integrate as their authentic self and be happy, in our society,” Morin wrote.

Background on trans runner Nathanielle Morin

Morin has been active in running competitions for some time.

She made headlines after winning the women’s category in the 5K BougeBouge run held on February 4, 2024.

With a time of 25:32, she achieved the title of “fastest female” among all age groups.

However, if Morin had competed in the men’s category, she would have placed 10th.

This statistic has fueled debates about fairness in sports, particularly regarding trans athletes.

In a statement, Morin addressed concerns about her participation in women’s races.

She acknowledged that her history as a trans woman might raise eyebrows.

However, she believes that her medical transition and the current state of scientific research support her ability to compete in the women’s category.

“With all due respect to the level I compete at (amateur recreational), the state of scientific research in the field (for the amateur recreational level) and the fact that I have undergone a medical transition,

I consider that I have the legitimacy to participate in the right category unless the law prohibits me from doing so.”

“Let us remember that in Canada, no law prohibits it. As for other countries, I will comply with the local laws in force when it applies.”

The impact of policies

The conversation around trans athletes has gained attention due to recent policies in various countries.

In the United States, former President Donald Trump signed an executive order that restricts trans athletes from competing in women’s and girls’ sports.

This has led to confusion and discussions about fairness and inclusion in sports.

In Canada, the Canadian Human Rights Act protects the rights of trans individuals, allowing them to compete in accordance with their gender identity.

Morin asserts that the legal framework supports her participation and plans to continue competing accordingly.

Social media reactions

Morin’s victory and her statements have drawn mixed reactions from the public.

One user said: why is it so difficult to understand? if you are born male, any transition you make is superficial at best.

Every cell in your body is still has male DNA and all the athletic advantages that come with it (leaner muscle, denser bone, higher lung capacity, etc.) and that will never change no matter…

The second user wrote: Biological males should not compete against biological females-ever.

I can’t believe that there are people who thinks that this is o.k.

The third user commented: I am unaware of any medical procedure that can change a biological male into a biological female, or vice versa.

Another user said: This person beat a 12 year old and is proud of it? Canada is not protecting women’s rights.

Someone added: Congrats to the 12 year old girl. Don’t even focus on the ‘winner’.

Stop giving them attention. It is amazing that the 12 year old won amongst older competitors. That should be the talk.
