Katy Perry’s behavior during her Blue Origin space flight has sparked criticism. On social media, many deeming her actions a disrespectful mockery of NASA astronauts’ sacrifices.
Katy Perry’s space flight sparks controversy over her behavior
Katy Perry’s return to Earth after her 11-minute space flight aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard capsule has triggered a wave of backlash.
Upon landing, Perry dropped to her knees and kissed the ground, a gesture she described as a joyful moment.
However, critics have slammed her for this action.
They also argued that it was an insult to NASA astronauts who have faced extreme challenges in space.
Many pointed out that Perry’s short flight, lasting only three minutes in microgravity, pales in comparison to the months-long missions of astronauts like Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore.
These astronauts have faced much more demanding challenges in space
Perry’s actions criticized for trivializing space travel
After landing, Perry’s actions were seen as over-the-top and a mockery of true space exploration.
She exited the capsule, holding a daisy she had taken with her to space, before kissing the desert landscape.
During her post-flight interview, the host told Perry, ‘You are officially an astronaut,’ to which the singer graciously replied, ‘Thank you.’
The public reaction was harsh, with many questioning the value of her mission.
One critic shared, “What scientific contributions has Katy Perry made by taking this voyage?”
Additionally, many also pointed out the difference between celebrity space tourism and the sacrifices made by real astronauts.
While many believe that Katty’s kiss after returning from space is excessive, it is even seen as an insult to NASA astronauts who were stranded in space for 9 months.
One user on X wrote, “I’d understand if Sunita Williams or Barry Wilmore kissed the ground after their return, but Katy Perry after 11 minutes just seems like a joke.”
A second wrote: From now on I will kiss the ground every time I get off a bus, train or plane.
While a third commented: Her interview sounded like she had brain damage
Another added: What surprises me most is so many actually believe they went to space. This was more obvious than the moon landing lol
Someone else said: Call themselves Astronauts now after a 11 minute joy flight, I went overseas on a plane so now I am a Qantas Captain.
A-list celebrities criticize the space stunt
Several A-list celebrities have also voiced their disapproval of Perry’s space flight.
Model Emily Ratajkowski called the event, “end time st,”** while actress Olivia Munn expressed her concern over the excessive cost of space tourism.
She also remarked, “It’s so much money to go to space when there are people who can’t even afford eggs.”
Even fast-food chain Wendy’s joined the criticism, posting on social media, “Can we send her back?”
The Blue Origin space flight and the criticism of celebrity space tourism
The Blue Origin NS-31 mission, launched on April 13, carried several prominent figures, including Jeff Bezos’ fiancé Lauren Sánchez, CBS Mornings host Gayle King, and activist Amanda Nguyen.
The mission allowed them to experience microgravity for a few minutes.
However, many observers have pointed out the stark contrast to the NASA astronauts’ mission, which was a genuine test of endurance and sacrifice.
The astronauts, Williams and Wilmore, returned to Earth on March 18 after enduring 286 days aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Their frail appearance after returning underscored the extreme toll their mission took on them.
