Elon Musk’s xAI is at the center of a new controversy following an investigation revealing that the company may be using illegal methane-burning turbines to supply electricity to its Memphis data center.

Local watchdog groups allege that xAI has significantly exceeded its permitted energy capacity by running 35 turbines, despite only applying for permission to operate 15.

The Memphis facility plays a critical role in xAI’s operations, supporting AI systems like the chatbot Grok, which has seen a spike in usage since its integration with Musk’s social platform, X (formerly Twitter).

As the artificial intelligence sector continues to expand at breakneck speed, so too do its energy requirements.

Data centers powering complex AI models demand vast amounts of electricity—often equivalent to what’s needed to support an entire city.

In xAI’s case, the Memphis facility reportedly draws around 420 megawatts of power.

This extreme consumption has raised alarms among environmental advocates, who argue that the AI boom is contributing to increased air pollution and carbon emissions, especially in underserved communities.

Community pushback and legal concerns mount

The backlash against xAI intensified when KeShaun Pearson, director of Memphis Community Against Pollution, addressed the Shelby County Board of Commissioners.

Pearson claimed that the company’s use of unpermitted turbines is not only illegal but is also damaging public health.

“They have submitted a permit for 15 turbines, yet they are using double that amount with no permit,” Pearson said.“Nobody else should be burying their families because these rogue, rich, white, racist people continue to build projects that are suffocating us.”

Local legal groups argue that xAI’s generator use may violate the Clean Air Act, given the high levels of pollutants emitted in the area surrounding the facility.

xAI expansion plans could worsen impact

Despite the backlash, Elon Musk has signaled that he plans to expand the Memphis xAI facility, which currently spans the area of approximately 13 football fields.

Doubling its size would not only increase power demands but potentially intensify the facility’s environmental footprint.

Additionally, xAI’s recent acquisition of the X platform suggests the company will soon leverage social media user data to train its models—further compounding power usage and operational scale.

The AI industry’s crossroads: innovation vs. accountability

The situation surrounding xAI highlights a broader dilemma facing the AI industry.

As demand for advanced AI solutions grows, so too does the responsibility to innovate ethically and sustainably.

Companies like xAI must strike a delicate balance between pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence and minimizing harm to local communities and the environment.
