Harvey School District worker was accused of stealing $1.5M in chicken wings

Vera Liddell worked for the Harvey School District in Illinois.

She was accused of illegally ordering over 11,000 cases of chicken wings intended for remote students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

She picked up the food using a district cargo van, according to WGN-TV.

The scheme was discovered during a routine audit.

It revealed that the school district was $300,000 over its annual budget, even though the year was only halfway through.

Prosecutors said they discovered invoices signed by Liddell ordering huge quantities of food, primarily chicken wings, that never made it to the students.

“The woman was accused of ordering 11,000 cases of chicken wings from the school’s food supplier.

She picked them up herself, but the food never reached the school or the students.” the report states.

Liddell pleaded guilty to stealing the food. She was sentenced to 9 years in prison for her theft.

Prosecutors explained that Liddell could steal them for a long time.

The wings had bones, so they were not suitable for student meals.

“The massive fraud began at the height of COVID during a time when students were not allowed to be physically present in school,” court documents said.

“Even though the children were learning remotely, the school district continued to provide meals for the students that their families could pick up.”

The sheer scale of Liddell’s theft is shocking.

The amount of $1.5 million worth of chicken wings is nearly unimaginable. It is a quantity that could last a person a lifetime.

In fact, the current world record for the most chicken wings eaten in 12 minutes is just 276, set by an Australian man named James Webb.

So what exactly was Liddell planning to do with them?

The report indicates that she might have intended to sell the food on the black market.

Food theft, especially of valuable items like cheese, is common in the criminal world.

It is more likely that Liddell became overly excited about her love for chicken wings.

She probably did not think about the consequences of her actions.
