A 57-year-old man living in Llandrindod Wells, Powys, Wales, tragically lost his life while attempting to separate two frozen burgers with a knife.

The man was found dead in his apartment after a long disappearance

Barry Griffiths, the victim, was found in his apartment several days after the accident.

Authorities were alerted when he had not been seen for an extended period.

After arriving at the scene, police discovered a trail of blood leading from the bedroom to the bathroom and hallway, which left them puzzled.

Barry was found deceased on his bed, fully clothed, with his mobile phone and wallet nearby.

According to the investigation, Barry suffered an accidental injury while trying to separate the frozen burgers.

His body was discovered with a stab wound to the stomach, which was later confirmed as the cause of death during a post-mortem examination.

Detectives think Barry might have been trying to cut the burgers when he accidentally stabbed himself.

Barry had limited use of one arm from a previous stroke.

Detective Chief Inspector Jonathan Rees shared insights during the inquest.

He noted that the bottom drawer of the freezer was left open, and two uncooked burgers, along with a knife and a tea towel, were found on the kitchen counter.

He hypothesized that Barry was trying to separate the frozen patties when the tragic incident occurred.

Barry’s well-being was a concern when he didn’t contact friends or family for over a week.

Barry lived alone in supported accommodation and was known to be very private.

His sudden disappearance led to worries and eventually to the discovery of his body.

The conclusion and tribute of officials

During the inquest, Detective Sergeant Stephen Vaughan expressed his belief that Barry’s death was not a suicide but rather an unexplained accident.

There was no indication of foul play, and the evidence pointed towards a tragic mishap in the kitchen.

Area Coroner Patricia Morgan concluded that Barry likely died as a result of an unfortunate accident while preparing food.

She acknowledged the difficult nature of the evidence presented and expressed her condolences to those affected by this tragic event.

She said: ‘I appreciate the evidence is difficult to hear and traumatic.

‘Thank you for your patience while the investigation was ongoing. I express my condolences at this difficult time.’
