Authorities believe the devices will reveal crucial details about Payne’s final hours.
Detectives are especially interested in the last people he contacted before his death on Wednesday afternoon. Reports indicate that the singer had reportedly smashed both devices before his fall.
Following his death from a fall off the third-floor balcony of the Casa Sur Hotel, investigators are now analyzing the phone and laptop that Payne reportedly smashed. Meanwhile, prosecutors are questioning five witnesses to piece together the incident.
Hotel staff expressed concern about Payne’s access to a low balcony. They stated that the 5-foot-10 star appeared to be intoxicated, making it easier for him to fall over the glass railing, which stands about 4 feet high.
Emergency services received two calls from hotel employees. One call described a guest “intoxicated by drugs and alcohol.”
Police found Payne’s hotel room in complete disarray.
Various items were broken, including a whiskey bottle and a lighter.
Some personal items, including a mobile phone, were later retrieved from the courtyard where his body was discovered.
Argentina’s National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office is treating the case as an “inconclusive death.”
They are investigating the circumstances surrounding his fall. Initial reports suggest that Payne may have been experiencing a “substance abuse outbreak” prior to the incident.
Employees had expressed fears about Payne’s state before his fall.
They noted that he seemed inebriated and was acting erratically, even smashing his laptop in the hotel lobby. One hotel worker, Esteban, described the urgency of the situation in his calls to emergency services.
He initially reported, “We have a guest who’s off his head on drugs and is destroying everything in his room.”
After a brief disconnection, he added, “I don’t know if the guest’s life is in danger. The room has a balcony, and we are afraid he might do something.”
Preliminary autopsy results revealed that Payne sustained 25 injuries from the fall.
The report indicated that injuries to his head alone could have been fatal. Medics noted that he did not adopt a reflex posture during the fall, suggesting he may have been unconscious.
Guests at the hotel recalled hearing loud noises and a scream before the incident.
Doug Jones, one of the guests, described his experience: “I thought they were working on the room. There was a lot of noise, heavy lifting, and banging.”
After the fall, hotel staff raised the alarm at 5:04 PM, with an ambulance arriving shortly after. Unfortunately, Payne was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Liam Payne was a member of the globally successful band One Direction.
The group toured the world, producing five chart-topping albums and four number-one singles in the UK, including “Little Things.”
In 2019, Payne released his debut solo album, LP1, featuring tracks like “Polaroid” and “Strip That Down.”
Following the news of Payne’s death, fans and celebrities gathered to pay tribute.
A vigil was held outside the hotel, where mourners lit candles and laid flowers. A post-mortem examination revealed that the singer died from multiple traumas and internal and external hemorrhaging.
As the investigation continues, fans and friends mourn the loss of a talented artist whose life ended tragically too soon.
