One person said: Diet Coke is gross, Coke Zero tastes slightly nicer but cherry coke is the one for me!

A second wrote: Coke zero tastes better. Diet coke has a weird aftertaste.

While a third commented: Okay but I prefer the TASTE specifically of Diet Coke. I don’t NEED a diet, I just find regular coke too sugary. But everyone gets on me about how bad the aspartame is

Another added: zero tastes SO much better, for all diet sodas. never as good as real soda. but when you have to make the switch, it is what it is lol

Key differences in taste and ingredients

Diet Coke and Coke Zero may both be calorie-free, but they have distinct flavors.

Coca-Cola explains that Coke Zero is closer to the original Coca-Cola taste, while Diet Coke offers a lighter flavor due to a different blend of ingredients.

The real difference, however, lies in their sweeteners.

Sweeteners: The key to the flavor difference

The primary distinction between the two drinks is in their sweeteners.

Diet Coke is sweetened exclusively with aspartame, while Coke Zero uses both aspartame and acesulfame potassium (Ace-K). This difference in sweeteners is what contributes to their contrasting tastes.

Are artificial sweeteners safe?

Both Diet Coke and Coke Zero contain artificial sweeteners, which have been a point of contention in the wellness community.

While some consider these sweeteners harmful, they are both FDA-approved and deemed safe in moderation.

You may have heard that aspartame has been linked to an increased risk of cancer. However, experts, including Professor Lawrence Young from the University of Warwick, note that the evidence remains inconclusive.

While some studies suggest a slight risk, no clear association has been established.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) acknowledges the limited evidence linking aspartame to liver cancer.

However, they emphasize the need for more research to draw definitive conclusions. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues to support the safety of aspartame, stating that it is safe for consumption at common levels.
