Baby otter in tears on doorstep after losing mother

Friday, 19/05/2023, 11:29 (GMT+7)

Whether it was due to the inclement weather or the forceful tide, the baby otter found himself in a solitary state, devoid of any companionship in the world. His mother was absent and untraceable.

On its Facebook page, the Scottish SPCA expressed concern for the vulnerable otter during this perilous period, noting that young otters are at high risk of being swept away from their dens by swollen rivers.

At this stage of development, their swimming abilities are not yet well-developed.

In a remarkable turn of events, the 10-week-old otter found himself on a doorstep in Kirkcudbright, Scotland, on Monday, seemingly guided by an instinctive sense of hope. His soft cries caught the attention of a compassionate individual.

Although he may have been separated from his family forever, he has found solace in the embrace of a new kind of family—the dedicated rescuers at the National Wildlife Rescue Centre, which operates under the umbrella of the Scottish SPCA.

Under the name Buddy, this adorable otter is receiving tender care, including bottle-feeding and plentiful hand-fed fish.

The most heartwarming aspect is that he is no longer solitary. He will soon meet three other orphaned otters—Ebb, Tide, and Wave—who have also experienced the loss of their mothers. Once they are all prepared, they will be released into the wild as a united group, ready to embark on their journey together.
