Despite the initial distress, fate intervened a few days later when he encountered the perfect individual to rescue him.
The cat was discovered crying beside his belongings last Wednesday, catching the attention of Meredith Ferrel who managed to capture a few photographs of the feline before it ran away.
She promptly shared the images with Flatbush Area Team for Cats (FAT Cats), a cat rescue group in Flatbush, Brooklyn, seeking assistance in locating the cat.
Upon receiving the photos, FAT Cats swiftly turned to social media to initiate the search. "Despite numerous efforts from rescue groups, concerned neighbors, and our own members sweeping the area repeatedly, we were unable to locate the cat in time," FAT Cats shared on Facebook.
Then, on Sunday morning, a breakthrough came when a call came in and Karen Oh, a local TNR advocate and retired cat rescuer, discovered the kitty in her backyard, just a block away from where it was initially sighted.
Rushing to meet the cat and confirm his identity, they exclaimed, "It's him!" Champ expressed that the cat seemed to have an innate understanding of Karen's immense love for animals.
The cat was promptly taken to the vet for a check-up and to be screened for a microchip, though none was found. Despite this, the one-year-old feline received a clean bill of health. To honor the location where he was first discovered, he was given the name Nostrand.
The exact reason for his abandonment remains unknown. Champ speculated, "My guess is that either a family had to move and, for whatever reason, couldn't take him, or he was dumped because he was an unneutered male cat who reached maturity and may have been 'acting out' in the house. Those are the two main reasons friendly cats in our area end up on the street."
Grateful for the attention and assistance he received, Nostrand showed no resistance when undergoing medical procedures, such as having blood drawn for testing, as he instinctively knew he was in good hands.
After four days of relentless searching for Nostrand, the kitty couldn't have encountered a more suitable person to guide him to safety. "We are over the moon to be able to find him a loving, forever home."
