Elon Musk Will Host SNL in May

Tesla Inc. CEO Elon Musk will be hosting SNL on May 8, 2021, with Miley Cyrus returning as the musical guest for the sixth time.

Elon Musk will host Saturday Night Live next month. Saturday Night Live is a weekly sketch comedy show created by Lorne Michaels in 1975. The show features a new host and musical guest each week, some of the most notable hosts being legends like Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin, and Tom Hanks. SNL served as the career launchpad for many actors/writers in the television industry, including The Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon, as well as dynamic comedy duo Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

Musk is a pop culture and business icon, known primarily as the CEO and architect of Tesla, an electric car company. Musk is also the founder of SpaceX, whose goal is to increase space tourism and colonization on the planet Mars. Additionally, Musk is one of the richest people in the entire world, holding a net worth of over $175 million. Due to his inherently bold business ventures, Musk has captured and remained in the public eye for some time. However, this praise is shadowed by Musk’s less-than-ideal behavior before business investors and his faulty leadership of Tesla, Inc. Despite Musk’s public backlash, he is still heralded as a technological visionary.

NBC has announced that Musk is set to host SNL on May 8, which will also feature Miley Cyrus as the musical guest. This monumental episode of SNL will mark Cyrus’s sixth performance as a musical guest after last appearing in November 2020.

While Musk wears many hats, he has yet to dip his toes in the world of comedy television. Anything can happen on SNL, and the live nature of the show may be just the push Musk needs to succeed on stage. Between his global name recognition and his position as an object of public dispute, audiences are more than likely to tune in to watch him on SNL no matter the outcome. Musk’s performance on SNL may even encourage other business and tech moguls to throw their hat into the ring for the famed hosting gig, expanding SNL‘s already large pool of guest talent.

In recent months, SNL‘s ratings have taken a dive due both to a month-long hiatus this past winter as well as an overall decrease in viewership throughout the last few seasons. Recent episodes this season have featured Nick Jonas (The Voice), Regé-Jean Page (Bridgerton), and even SNL alum Maya Rudolph, known for her comedic portrayal of Vice President, Kamala Harris, yet, the show’s ratings have continued to dip lower and lower. Because Musk and his business ventures have become common knowledge in the pop culture sphere, his appearance on SNL is likely to draw in larger and more varied segments of viewership for the late-night comedy show.
