The news of a mother of two losing her life to water toxicity after drinking too much water during a day out prompted people to wonder about the safe limits of water intake.

As individuals grapple with this concern, expert opinions have become valuable in understanding the appropriate quantity of water to consume.

Ashley Summers, 35, experienced dehydration during a family trip with temperatures soaring over 30°C, leading her to consume four bottles of water, approximately two liters, within a short span of 20 minutes.

However, two liters is the recommended daily water intake for the average person in a day.

As a consequence of drinking too much water in 20 minutes, Ashley soon felt lightheaded and had a headache.

Upon returning home, she passed out in her garage, prompting her family to immediately take her to IU Health Arnett Hospital in Lafayette, Indiana.

As a result, sadly, she never regained consciousness.

Alex Ebner, Owner of ACE Medical Company, has provided insights on this matter, and shared that "according to scientists, a person will only live three days without water." He continued: "By staying hydrated, a person can enjoy several important benefits in quality of life: more efficient brain function, higher energy, a healthier cardiovascular system, and fewer aches and pains."

Dr. Elena Salagean also explained: "The amount of water considered 'too much' will vary depending on your body size, weight, and general health condition. There isn't a generic cut-off for too much water as the amount will vary from person to person.

"Athletes in particular, or those living in hot climates, may need more water than others. As a general indication, it's best to drink according to your thirst levels and not to overdo it."

What is the ideal water consumption?

There is a widely recognized recommendation of drinking eight cups, equivalent to 64 ounces, of water daily for the average person. However, expert opinions differ, with some suggesting six cups while others propose up to approximately 13 cups.

Water plays a crucial role in maintaining various body functions, including waste elimination and temperature regulation. However, gulping down a day’s worth of liquids in mere minutes will do more harm than good.

To avoid overhydration, it is advisable to limit water intake to no more than 13 cups per day and not exceed one liter of water per hour.

Prior to doing exercise or spending time in the heat, it is recommended to drink 14 to 22 ounces of water two hours before to prevent both dehydration and overhydration.

In situations of intense physical activity, sports drinks are also helpful as they help replenish lost sugar, sodium, and potassium due to sweating.
