A devastating photo has emerged of North Carolina grandparents trapped on their roof before being swept away by floodwaters.
The sight became heart breaking when they were swept away by flood waters along with their grandson.
This tragedy occurred after Hurricane Helene struck the area.
Heart breakingflood tragedy in North Carolina
Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc across the northeast, causing fatalities in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
Officials anticipate the death toll may rise as rescue crews reach isolated areas.
North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper emphasized the gravity of the situation.
“There are a lot of people hurting,” he told MSNBC. “When you don’t have power, cellphone service, or water, this is a catastrophic situation.”
Hurricane Helene caused significant destruction, leading to a death toll of at least 133 people.
Buncombe County, where Asheville is located, reported 40 fatalities.
Desperate plea for help in flood tragedy
Jessica Drye Turner was in Texas when the disaster unfolded.
She pleaded for help on Facebook, describing her family stranded on their Asheville home.
Her loved ones were surrounded by floodwaters and watching vehicles float away.
Tragically, help did not arrive in time.
Turner revealed that the roof collapsed, resulting in her parents and 7-year-old nephew, Micah, drowning in the floodwaters.
She wrote on Facebook: ” My family is currently on the roof of their house in Asheville, NC with nothing but the clothes on their back and one working phone. My parents, in their 70s, my sister and 6 year old nephew have lost everything. They are watching 18 wheelers and cars floating by. In addition, part of the house they’re sitting on is in front of them. They’ve called 911 but they aren’t the only ones needing rescue. This is definitely a moment when faith is all you have. God knows the outcome already. I just pray for their lives, health and an inner peace in their spirits that they know God holds them in his hands.”
In her plea for assistance, Turner shared a photo taken by her sister, Megan Drye.
The image captured their parents, both in their 70s, huddled together with little Micah.
The floodwaters were alarmingly close to the roof’s edge.
“They’ve called 911, but they aren’t the only ones needing rescue,” Turner wrote. “This is definitely a moment when faith is all you have.”
A grief-stricken family struggles after a flood traged
Megan, who was trapped with their parents and Micah, was rescued about an hour later.
She became wedged in debris, which prevented her from being swept away.
In a follow-up post, Turner expressed her profound sorrow. She wrote, “I cannot convey in words the sorrow, heartbreak, and devastation my sisters and I are going through.”
Turner and her sister, Heather, rushed to Asheville overnight to support Megan.
They disregarded travel warnings prohibiting movement in Western North Carolina.
“If we had listened, Megan would still be in one of the loneliest situations ever,” Turner reflected.
Megan’s family faced a heart-wrenching loss
On Monday, Turner shared another tragic update.
Her nephew Micah’s body was found about a quarter-mile from where his mother was rescued.
“That was and still is a gut-wrenching moment,” she wrote. “He was such a perfect little boy. He wanted to be a superhero. And now he is.”
Turner expressed her hope that her family’s tragedy could lead others to faith.
“If his and my parents’ deaths lead many to Christ, then their deaths were worth it,” she said.
“I will praise the goodness of God when he takes death to lead others into new life. The last thing Micah yelled before he was taken was, ‘Jesus! Please help me!’” She added.
A GoFundMe page has been started to support Megan after the loss of her son.
