Gypsy had spent seven years incarcerated for her role in the 2015 murder of her mother, Claudine ‘Dee Dee’ Blanchard.
Dee Dee had allegedly kept Gypsy in a wheelchair, falsely claiming that she suffered from various ailments, including leukemia and muscular dystrophy.
This was later suspected to be a result of Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a mental illness that involves a caregiver falsifying an illness in a child to gain attention and sympathy.
In 2015, Gypsy, then 24, escaped her mother’s control with the help of her internet boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn. He was instructed to murder Dee Dee, and Gypsy was subsequently sentenced to second-degree murder. After serving seven years, Gypsy was granted early parole.

In an interview with People, Gypsy shared how her traumatic upbringing and complicated relationship with her mother have shaped her approach to motherhood.
