Netflix Orders Wings of Fire Animated Show From Ava DuVernay

Wings of Fire will be Ava DuVernay’s first animated series. The series is based on a book saga of the same title written by Tui T. Sutherland.

Netflix has officially ordered the animated TV adaption, Wings of Fire, helmed by Ava DuVernay. The upcoming Netflix series is based on a book series of the same title written by Tui T. Sutherland. The first book of the series was published in 2012, and the series has amounted to an impressive collection of 15 books.

The Wrap confirms that Wings of Fire has been officially picked up at Netflix with DuVernay attached. While DuVernay has an impressive and lengthy collection of works, this will be her first animated series. The series will consist of ten 40-minute episodes. DuVernay will be working alongside showrunners Dan Milano (Glitch Techs) and Christa Starr (Mystery Science Theater 3000) to adapt the books to the television medium. Netflix original animation Vice President, Melissa Cobb, is grateful that DuVernay chose to bring the series to Netflix. Cobb stated:

We couldn’t be more proud that Ava has chosen Netflix as the home for her first animated series. An epic fantasy saga full of sweep and spectacle, Wings of Fire promises to be a must-see event for the whole family.

DuVernay seems just as excited to work on the series. She called Sutherland’s series an “elegant saga filled with wisdom and wonder” that explores important themes. Some of DuVernay’s most successful works as a producer include Selma, When They See Us and Queen Sugar. She most recently worked as a writer on the recently-canceled New Gods. It’ll be intriguing to see how she handles working with an animated series for the first time.

As per the official synopsis, in Wings of Fire, “a bitter war has raged for generations between the dragon tribes who inhabit the epic world of Pyrrhia. According to prophecy, five young dragons will rise to end the bloodshed and bring peace back to the land. Raised and trained in secret from the time they were hatched, the Dragonets of destiny – Clay, Tsunami, Glory, Starflight, and Sunny – embark on an evolving quest that will bring them face to face with their true selves and the overwhelming scope of this savage war they are destined to bring to an end.
