At just one year old, Petey, an endearing rescue dog, had become the shelter's longest resident in North Carolina.
Although the small shelter was over capacity, Petey's stay was extended because there were no potential adopters. To provide Petey with more time to find his forever family, the shelter reached out to the SPCA of Wake County for help.
According to Samantha Ranlet, spokesperson for the Wake County SPCA, as soon as Petey arrived at the shelter, he eagerly ran inside and pulled on his leash to enter the building.
The shelter staff was surprised by his friendly and cheerful demeanor, especially since he had been overlooked by potential adopters at previous shelters.
Despite concerns that Petey might not survive, the SPCA quickly posted his photo on their website. Fortunately, it only took a few weeks for a loving family to adopt him. After a month of waiting, Petey could finally leave the shelter and go to his forever home.
Upon seeing the cute picture of Petey, his forever family instantly knew that he was meant to be with them, according to Ranlet.
Petey spent a month at the SPCA before he was adopted by his new family, finally ending his long stay at the shelter.
Petey's new family picked him up after he had spent a month at the SPCA. Patty broke up after a long stay at the shelter. Petey quickly adjusted to his surroundings. He loves spending time with his beloved siblings and puppies.
Petey, the dog who was once forgotten at the shelter, cuddles up in his cozy bed with a big grin on his face every night. The shelter staff is optimistic that the other long-term residents at the shelter will have similarly happy endings, just like Petey's.
