On Wednesday, the Seattle-based coffee giant, Starbucks, made an announcement that customers across all its US and Canadian locations can use their own for all orders, which reduces waste.

According to the report, the customers will receive a 10-cent discount, and members of the chain's rewards program will receive 25 stars.

As stated in a press release by the company, this effort is part of Starbucks' commitment to reducing waste by 50% by 2030.

Kate Daly, Starbucks' Managing Director, said: “As we know, the most sustainable cup is likely the one you already own."

The customer will use personal cups for all orders if they are clean and do not exceed 40 ounces.

Starbucks has outlined two conditions for the personal cups brought in by customers: they must be clean, and their capacity should not exceed 40 ounces.

Starbucks said that in their effort to reduce waste, Starbucks clarified in response to Frequently Asked Questions that baristas cannot rinse personal cups in Starbucks equipment sinks; hence, only clean cups will be accepted as part of this waste-reducing initiative.

According to Starbucks, customers should tell baristas when placing their orders that they brought their own personal cups.

However, the personal-cup option will not be available for delivery orders on third-party apps like DoorDash and Uber Eats.

Nevertheless, the customer didn't use the personal cup if they ordered through third-party apps such as DoorDash and Uber Eats.

Starbucks also allows customers to use personal cups for all Starbucks standard-size options, including the eight-ounce Venti, the largest 24-ounce offering, and for orders that are hot, iced, and blended, like the chain’s signature Frappuccino blends.

Over the years, American environmentalists have lobbied against Starbuck's wasteful ways. So, their effort of Starbucks  will let customers use personal cups for all orders, which is highly appreciated.

The benefits of personal cups

By encouraging customers to use their own cups, Starbucks aims to minimize the number of single-use cups that end up in landfills.

Reducing waste

The most obvious benefit of using personal cups is the waste reduction. Disposable cups contribute significantly to the ever-growing landfill problem, and by using reusable cups, we can make a positive impact on the environment.

Saving resources

Manufacturing disposable cups requires a significant amount of resources, including water, energy, and raw materials. By using personal cups, we can conserve these valuable resources.

Minimizing pollution

The production and disposal of single-use cups contribute to air and water pollution. By opting for reusable cups, we can help mitigate these harmful effects.
