In the mountainside of Nazca, Peru, many archaeologists discovered a giant painting of a cat in 1927. The Nazca lines are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The painting line is so big that it can only be fully seen from a long distance or aerial view. It depicts lively scenes of animals, plants, and other shapes.
The giant painting was discovered when archaeologists were exploring a hill that was 37 meters high. According to experts, the cat painting is estimated to date back to 200 to 100 B.C.
According to the Ministry of Culture Peru, the image is very faint and difficult to see. Moreover, it is prone to disappearing due to its location on a giant mountainside. It has also been impacted by the natural erosion process.
"In a matter of weeks, the picture was cleaned, preserved, and enhanced to make the image of the cat visible through forward rotation.
Johnny Isla, the plane director of the Nazca-Palpa Archaeological Park, shared that there have been about 80 to 100 new images discovered in the Nazca and Palpa Valley in recent years.
Before, researchers had to sit in a plane to capture the pictures. Today, thanks to modern technology, they can use unmanned drones to capture them from above.
The lines of the giant cat painting have a width of 30 centimeters. It was created by removing rocks and soil to reveal contrasting shades. Isla shared that thanks to technological progress and modern methods, many scientists have discovered more new pictures.
