Hurricane Milton made landfall on Florida’s west coast on Wednesday night. The storm struck around 8:30 PM as a Category 3 hurricane. It had maximum sustained winds of 120 mph near Siesta Key.

Siesta Key is a barrier island town with about 4,500 residents. It is located around 60 miles south of Tampa Bay, home to over 3 million people.

Milton also spawned at least 19 tornadoes. It caused significant damage across multiple counties and destroyed around 125 homes, primarily mobile homes.

The National Hurricane Center labeled Milton an “extremely dangerous” storm. It posed risks of deadly storm surge, fierce winds, and flash flooding across Central Florida.

As of now, no fatalities have been reported. However, residents were warned against venturing outside. “It’s too dangerous to evacuate safely,” Governor Ron DeSantis advised. “You have to shelter in place and just hunker down.”

The hurricane is expected to cross Florida overnight. It will move into the Atlantic Ocean, maintaining hurricane force. Once it passes Florida, it may weaken but still pose storm-surge dangers along the Atlantic coast.

Robert Ray’s coverage serves as a reminder of the risks associated with hurricanes. As Hurricane Milton impacts Florida, residents must prioritize their safety. Staying informed and following official guidance is crucial during such extreme weather events.
