Whole neighborhood stunned after boy scout builds a nuclear reactor in his mom’s shed

A 15-year-old boy made headlines when he built a nuclear reactor under his mother's shed for a long time.

Boy Scouts are known for their self-sufficiency and ability to tackle life's challenges.

However, one boy scout in Michigan took it to a whole new level by constructing a nuclear reactor in his mother's shed.

In August 1994, 15-year-old David Charles Hahn embarked on a project that would capture the attention of his neighbors and local authorities.

Little did they know, his actions were not those of a typical scout learning to tie knots or navigate the wilderness.

David set out to build a homemade breeder reactor, utilizing his knowledge of nuclear physics.

The homemade nuclear reactor was discovered when neighbors suspected him of stealing

Unfortunately, David's neighbors misunderstood his activities and suspected him of theft when they witnessed him loading materials into his car.

However, when the police arrived, they discovered something far more astonishing which was radioactive materials.

The shed and its contents were found to be contaminated with unusually high levels of radiation, with one can registering a staggering 50,000 counts per minute.

David was promptly arrested, and the authorities faced the challenge of safely disposing of the radioactive materials.

Authorities quickly dealt with the 15-year-old boy scout's nuclear furnace

The contaminated waste from the shed was eventually dumped, and the potential nuclear reactor was disposed of at a designated waste site in the desert.

A costly "Superfund clean-up" operation, estimated at $60,000, was initiated to ensure the safety of the surrounding area.

Although charges against David were eventually dropped, he was prohibited from returning to his mother's house until the shed was thoroughly cleared of any remaining radiation.

David's story gained further attention when it was documented in the book "The Radioactive Boy Scout." However, in 2007, he faced legal trouble unrelated to his nuclear experiment, pleading guilty to a theft case involving smoke alarms.

In 2016, David passed away due to an apparent overdose, highlighting his struggles with mental health, drug abuse, and alcoholism.
