The world’s first pregnant man shares what life has been like since his groundbreaking announcement about the birth of his daughter.

Beatie’s amazing journey involved hormone therapy and surgeries during his transition.

He gained worldwide attention when he announced his pregnancy on The Oprah Winfrey Show and in PEOPLE last April.

Beatie’s transition journey and parenthood story

Raised in Hawaii as Tracy Lagondino, Beatie started living as a man in his twenties.

He later legally changed his gender on official documents.

In 2003, Beatie and Nancy, a divorced mother of two, tied the knot after Nancy had a hysterectomy due to endometriosis.

The couple’s path to parenthood involved the use of donor sperm and Beatie’s eggs, utilizing artificial insemination techniques.

Following their move to Bend, Oregon in 2005, where they run a T-shirt printing business, they successfully conceived their first child.

Beatie reflected on his unique situation and mentioned that the only difference in his parenting experience was not being able to breastfeed.

“The only thing different about me is that I can’t breastfeed my baby. But a lot of mothers don’t,” he said.

Beatie clarified that the delivery was not a C-section, despite some reports.

He also mentioned that he plans to publish a book about his remarkable journey later this year.

“When my story came out, there wasn’t a single person in the public eye as a transgender man — most people had never heard of it,” Beatie said.

On top of that, they can give birth!

I think exposing the importance of fertility for trans people was a huge eye-opener.”

After welcoming his first child, Susan, in 2008, Thomas Beatie continued to expand his family, having two more children with his then-wife, Nancy Beatie.

Following their separation in 2012, Beatie remarried in 2016 to his second wife, Amber Beatie (formerly Nicholas), who gave birth to their child in 2018.

Currently residing in Phoenix, Thomas Beatie leads a relatively quiet life with his family.

Despite some public speaking and acting jobs, he loves spending time with his older children.

They are 11, 12, and 13, and stay at his home and their mother’s home.

Together, they enjoy activities like swimming, playing checkers, and experimenting with new recipes.

“I think a lot of people are still pigeonholed, thinking that if you want to be transgender, you have to completely get rid of all your (reproductive) organs,” Beatie said.

“To be a true transgender person, you just have to go through with this — and that you shouldn’t want to have kids.

There needs to be discussions about fertility, and preservation.

Being transgender, you shouldn’t have to lose your right of having a family.

You’re entitled to be happy and have a family and be respected.”
