On social media, many viewers stunnned after a mum shared creating a ‘magical’ DIY ‘floating loft bed’ for their daughter.
Parents defend DIY floating loft bed amid safety concerns
A mother has faced backlash after revealing her daughter’s new floating loft bed. While the unique design impressed some, many questioned its safety.
Renee and her husband built a floating loft bed for their daughter’s room. The bed, elevated several feet above the ground, appears to be suspended by ropes.
They proudly shared a photo of their unicorn-loving daughter sitting on the bed. While the little girl was thrilled, online reactions were divided.
Concerns over height and safety
Many parents expressed anxiety over the bed’s safety. Some pointed out that it lacked a sturdy railing to prevent falls.
Others worried that a child could slip between the mattress and rope.
One concerned that child could slipping under the top rail and getting stuck, while some also raised practical concerns about changing the bedding.
However, renee reassured critics that safety was a priority. She explained that steel cables were anchored to the roof trusses beneath the rope.
“My husband installs height safety access platforms and abseiling anchors professionally,” she said. “This was installed with expert knowledge.”
She also noted that the bed is no higher than a standard loft or bunk bed. It was tested to support up to 900kg in weight.
Despite the controversy, Renee’s daughter adored her new bed. She even asked when a slide could be added.
“Our daughter loves her new bed,” Renee told FEMAIL. “Now she wants a slide, so my husband is working on that next.”
The inspiration behind the loft bed
The family had searched for the perfect bed but struggled to find one that met their needs. Many loft beds had built-in desks or cupboards, limiting play space.
“We wanted an open area underneath for toys,” Renee explained. “Most of the available loft beds were too expensive and basic for the price.”
The couple spent $560 on materials, nearly half the price of the $1,000 beds they found in stores.
“It took my husband 18 hours over three days to install,” Renee said. “I painted the base and ladder myself.”
Mixed reactions from the public
While some people were skeptical, others admired the craftsmanship.
One person said: If you’re scared your child might get hurt falling out of a bed then be sure to never let them ride a bike or walk across the road.
A second wrote: This is how most are built and if anchored correctly they are perfectly safe. Younger kids you can add a net so they dont fall.
While a third commented: Only thing I’d worry about is the child slipping and getting stuck in the rope. That’s got accidental hanging written all over it!
Someone else said: No different than loft beds as long as it’s anchored correctly.
Another added: That looks amazing I would just worry about it being so close to the window.
