An American couple surprised diners by covering everyone’s meal in a busy Canadian restaurant, reportedly as an apology for Donald Trump.
American couple pays for all diners in a Canadian restaurant as an apology for Trump’s rhetoric
Recently, an American couple made headlines for their generous act in a Canadian restaurant.
They paid for everyone’s meal at a busy eatery in Windsor, Ontario.
This kind gesture was meant to show their love for Canada and to express their disapproval of former President Donald Trump’s remarks.
The couple, Sarah and Bill from Ann Arbor, Michigan, visited a popular restaurant called Toast on Erie Street.
Their act surprised both the staff and the patrons present.

May Hermiz, a co-owner of the restaurant, shared her astonishment at such a unique request.
She mentioned that in her nine years of business, no one had ever offered to pay for all the diners.
“I was kind of stunned because nobody has ever done that in our nine years of being in business,” Hermiz said.
“Nobody has ever paid for the whole restaurant.”
The couple approached the restaurant staff with an unexpected offer
When Sarah and Bill approached the restaurant staff, they had a special message to share.
After the staff announced the couple’s generous act, Sarah stood up to speak to everyone.
She explained that they wanted to show appreciation for Canadians and to apologize for the actions of the U.S. government.

Sarah expressed her feelings about the current situation in the United States.
She mentioned that she disagrees with what the U.S. is doing, especially regarding the tariffs imposed by Trump.
This sentiment resonated with many diners, who supported her message of unity and kindness.
Hermiz recounted: “She hates what the United States is doing to us and she doesn’t support it,”
The co-owner added: “And she’s so happy we won the hockey game and it’s a little token of appreciation for Canadians and how much she loves us and how much she loves supporting local.”

The impact of Trump’s tariffs on Canada
Trump’s recent announcement of a 25% tariff on many imports from Canada has created tension between the two countries.
This decision has upset many Canadians who felt the economic strain from these tariffs.
Trump defended his actions by saying they were necessary to protect American interests.
“This is an abuse that took place for many, many years,” Trump told reporters, defending the tariffs. “The tariffs will go forward, yes, and we’re going to make up a lot of territory.”
His comments have led to backlash and concern among Canadians.
The couple’s act was a way to counteract the negativity surrounding these political tensions.
By paying for the meals, they aimed to send a positive message during a time of uncertainty.

Reactions of the diners in the restaurant
The atmosphere in the restaurant changed when the announcement was made.
Diners were shocked and delighted by the news.
Irene Chyz, who was celebrating a friend’s birthday, described the moment as deeply moving.
We were just so taken aback. You’ve never heard of such a thing, and it was just wonderful to experience it,” she said.
“My friend and I went over and we gave our thanks to them, gave them a big hug and they were just such warm, lovely, lovely people,” she added.
Aileen Ganley-Mutter, who was at the restaurant with her godchildren, also shared her surprise.

“We were all kind of shocked because that doesn’t happen because there’s about 50 to 60 people in there,” she recalled. “A full-on cheer and clapping just broke out.”
She wanted to contribute to the tip but was told by the couple that they did not want any money in return.
They simply wanted to show their support for Canada.
