The Tulsa Fire Department has released a harrowing security video that captures the moment a dog’s playful gnawing triggered a rapid and destructive blaze.
The incident occurred on July 31st, when the dog, left unsupervised in a room, discovered a portable battery and decided to investigate it further.
The dog was just exploring when it accidentally chewed through the battery’s casing.
This caused the battery to malfunction and created a dangerous situation.
When the owner returned home, they immediately noticed something was wrong. They saw smoke coming from the house and quickly called 911.
The Tulsa Fire Department responded promptly to the emergency call.
Firefighters arrived on the scene and found flames in the living room.
They quickly worked to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the house.
Thanks to the quick actions of the fire department, the fire was brought under control. However, the damage to the home was significant.
The living room suffered extensive fire damage, and other areas were affected by smoke and water used to put out the flames.
Fortunately, the dogs were able to escape the burning room through a doggy door, avoiding any injuries.
The fire department later issued a warning to pet owners.
They advised people to keep hazardous items, such as batteries and cords, out of reach of pets.
“Lithium-ion batteries are known for storing a significant amount of energy in a compact space,” explained Andy Little, the public information officer of the Tulsa Fire Department.
“When this energy is released uncontrollably, it can generate heat, flammable and toxic gases, and even lead to explosions.”
Little warned that the situation might have ended differently if the pets couldn’t escape.
It could have also been dangerous if a family was sleeping upstairs and unaware of the fire.
“Many individuals keep these batteries within their homes for convenience, unaware of the potential dangers they pose,” Little said.
“It is important to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines when using lithium-ion batteries.
Always use approved chargers and keep them out of reach of children and pets.”
Pet owners are now urged to be vigilant and take proactive measures to safeguard their homes.
Experts advise keeping all hazardous items, such as batteries, away from curious pets.
They also recommend closely supervising pets to avoid dangerous situations.
“Pets are a wonderful addition to any family, but this incident shows that we must also be mindful of the risks they can pose, even unintentionally,” Little cautioned.
