Around 8:30 p.m., the 150-foot-tall ship crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge, snapping its masts and injuring nearly 20 crew members.

Two sailors aboard the ship were killed in the accident. All those injured remained on the vessel; no one fell overboard.

According to NYPD officials, the ship had been departing for Iceland as part of a scheduled training voyage.

“No one fell into the water, they were all hurt inside the ship,” an NYPD official said, according to WCBS. “The ship, from what I was informed by the supervisors of the ship, it was disembarking and going to Iceland.”

Early reports suggest a possible mechanical malfunction may have caused the ship to veer off its planned course into the bridge.

The incident remains under investigation. Authorities have not confirmed the exact cause of the navigation failure.
