A Tesla owner has driven 144,000 miles in six years. He reveals how he saved thousands of dollars on gas by using his electric vehicle.
Andy Slye is a YouTuber and proud Tesla owner.
He has shared a remarkable story about the money he saved on gas after driving his electric car for six years.
In a recent video, he explained the costs of owning his Tesla Model 3 and how much he has benefited from using electricity instead of gasoline.
Andy bought his Tesla Model 3 in 2019 for $54,000. Over the past six years, he has driven a total of 144,225 miles.
This distance is more than what the average American drives in ten years, according to the Federal Highway Administration.
Andy wanted to show how owning an electric vehicle (EV) like a Tesla can save money compared to a traditional gas car.
“Exactly six years ago I did something crazy and spent more money than I ever thought I would on a car,” he began.
Tesla owner spends a huge sum on his car
In his video, Andy broke down his expenses for the car. He spent about $3,200 on optional features and accessories.
This included $1,800 on paint protection film to keep the car looking new, $200 for window tinting, and $500 on a radar detector to help him avoid speeding tickets.
He mentioned that he received one speeding ticket each year for the first three years.
However, the radar detector has helped him stay out of trouble since then.
“I got one speeding ticket every year for the first three years of ownership so I ended up getting this radar detector and it’s been worth it because ever since I’ve gotten it I haven’t been pulled over,” he reasoned.
In addition to these optional costs, Andy had some necessary expenses for repairs.
He spent $2,040 on repairs that were not covered by warranty and $2,730 on two sets of new tires.
Despite these costs, he believes the savings from charging his Tesla far outweigh any expenses.
“Now let’s talk about one of the best things about owning a Tesla: the charging costs,” he began.
“I live in a State where electricity is super cheap. I’m literally just charging in my garage overnight when electricity is the cheapest.”

One of the best parts of owning a Tesla, Andy explained, is the low cost of charging.
He lives in an area where electricity is cheap, and he charges his car overnight in his garage.

The sum of gas in 6 years cost Andy only $2,772
The cost of charging is about $0.08 per kilowatt-hour.
Over six years, his Tesla has used a total of 36,482 kilowatt-hours of electricity.
This means he has spent approximately $2,772 on home charging.
When he needs to use a Supercharger while out, he has spent about $583.
Additionally, he invested $900 to install a NEMA 14-50 outlet in his garage for efficient charging.
In total, Andy’s charging costs amount to around $4,255.
Tesla owner stated he would drive his Tesla until the wheels fell off
To compare these costs with a gas vehicle, Andy noted that the average annual cost of gas in the United States is about $3,306.53.
By driving his Tesla instead of a gas car, he estimates that he has saved around $20,000 on fuel over the past six years.
This significant savings is one of the main reasons he is so satisfied with his choice of vehicle.
Overall, Andy’s total expenses for owning the Tesla, including the purchase price and all costs, have reached about $75,175.
Given the high mileage he has achieved, this averages to around $7,517 per year.
Andy is determined to keep driving his Tesla until it can no longer run.
“I’m going to drive it until the wheels fall off,” he concluded.
