A vegetarinan becomes hooked on meat after pregnancy

Tammi Jonas, 49, spent 10 years as a committed vegetarian.

Her decision was influenced by Peter Singer’s book Animal Liberation, which opened her eyes to the mistreatment of farm animals.

However, everything changed when she became pregnant for the third time in her 30s.

“I became dangerously anemic,” Jonas told Daily Mail Australia. After years of avoiding meat, she craved it. One day, while at work, she ate a burger—and she was hooked.

A vegetarian transitions back to meat after years of abstinence

While it took some time for Jonas to start eating pork and poultry, she immediately felt better after consuming beef and lamb.

“I felt healthier because I was giving my body what it needed,” she said. However, she remained cautious about where her meat came from.

Coming from a farming family in Oregon, Jonas and her husband Stuart decided to start their own farm.

They established Jonai Farms and Meatsmiths, aiming to provide ethical meat options.

“I knew immediately that we would focus on pigs, as they are some of the most mistreated animals in industrial systems,” Jonas shared with 10 Daily.

For the past eight years, Jonas and her husband have been running their farm with ethical practices.

“There are no harmful chemicals used, and the animals live as naturally as possible,” she explained.

While some people may see killing animals for food as unethical, Jonas doesn’t agree. “I don’t think killing an animal for consumption is unethical if it had a good life,” she said.
