Lobo, once a thriving stopover in the 19th century, is now deserted.

The town was abandoned in the 1990s after its last resident left in 1991.

Since then, the property has remained largely untouched until Alexander Bardorff and his friends purchased it in 2001 for just $20,000.

Bardorff, originally from Germany, sees the sale of Lobo not just as a financial transaction, but as a way to find someone who truly appreciates the land.

He views the town as “his baby” and hopes to find new owners who will respect its “soul.”

While much of the town is abandoned, one of the homes has a working water pump, providing both hot and cold water.

Lobo’s past and potential future

Once an important stop on the mail route between San Antonio and San Diego, Lobo’s history stretches back to the mid-1800s.

Since its abandonment, the town has transformed into an artistic hub, hosting art installations, film festivals, and musical performances.

Now, prospective buyers are pitching ideas to revitalize the town.

These include unusual concepts like a kangaroo farm, a nudist colony, and even an escape room attraction.

Others are thinking about building a super-powerful radio tower or developing sustainable agriculture and rental properties.

Lobo’s peaceful desert landscape is an ideal location for creative endeavors.

It sits between Van Horn, home to Jeff Bezos’s space company, and Marfa, a well-known art destination.

One musician even envisions Lobo as a center for desert-inspired art and music.

“Just being out here it kind of slows down time,” prospective buyer Andrea Alvarez told the Journal.

Bardorff, along with two other buyers, will select the winning bidder for Lobo. The deadline to place a bid on the town is June 24.

Owning an entire town is a dream for many, and Lobo provides an affordable opportunity to make that dream a reality.

Though it may not be the first ghost town on the market, it is certainly one of the cheapest. Will you be the one to take on the challenge of reviving Lobo?

This is a rare chance to own a piece of Texas history and make your mark on a unique and storied town.
