Alexis Ohanian responds to backlash over Serena Williams’ Super Bowl cameo, defending her against criticism and highlighting her impact.
Serena Williams makes a surprise appearance at Super Bowl 2025 halftime show
Serena Williams shocked fans with a brief cameo during Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl 2025 Halftime Show. The 43-year-old tennis icon danced alongside Lamar’s backup dancers at Caesars Superdome on Sunday.
Her husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, quickly shared his reaction to the moment on social media.
Ohanian Defends Williams’ Super Bowl performance
Ohanian, 41, took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his support.
“Pretty fantastic halftime show,” he wrote after posting photos from his VIP suite view.
He also addressed the backlash, referencing past criticism of Williams.
“Some of y’all have no idea how criticized Serena was for this same dance at Wimbledon 13 years ago and it shows. This is bigger than the music,” he wrote.
Williams’ Cameo sparks online debate
Williams’ appearance surprised many, especially given her past relationship with rapper Drake. The two were briefly linked in 2011. Drake previously revealed that he wrote the 2016 song “Too Good” for Williams.
Despite this, Williams married Ohanian in 2017. The couple now shares two daughters, Alexis Olympia Jr., 7, and Adira River, 1.
After the performance, Williams took to social media to express her excitement.
“Let’s go Super Bowl halftime??! I died a little!” she posted on X.
She later defended Taylor Swift, who was booed when shown on the Jumbotron.
“I love you @taylorswift13, don’t listen to those boos!!” Williams tweeted.
ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith criticizes Williams’ appearance
Not everyone was pleased with Williams’ involvement. ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith criticized the cameo on “First Take.”
“If I’m married and my wife is trolling her ex, go back to his ass, ’cause clearly you don’t belong with me,” Smith stated Monday.
His co-host, Ryan Clark, dismissed the remark.
“If you were with Serena Williams, you’re going to be a kept man anyway. Don’t start that,” Clark responded.
NFL analyst Shannon Sharpe also supported Ohanian, emphasizing his success and financial independence.
Ohanian stands by his wife
Despite the backlash, Ohanian remained supportive of Williams. His response highlighted the historical criticism she has faced and the significance of her moment on stage.
Williams has yet to respond to Smith’s comments but continues to celebrate her Super Bowl experience.
As debates continue, one thing remains clear: Serena Williams knows how to make headlines both on and off the court.
