American cheese actually originates in Switzerland, not the US

American cheese, a favorite in many households, is commonly used on burgers and for making grilled cheese sandwiches. Despite its widespread popularity in the U.S., this cheese is not American. It is believed to have originated in Switzerland in 1911.

American cheese was created by Swiss food chemists

Chef Andrew Gruel shared on Twitter that American cheese was developed by Swiss food chemists Walter Gerber and Fritz Stettler in 1911.

The first immigrants brought American cheese to the US

According to The Wisconsin Cheeseman, immigrants are credited with bringing American cheese to the U.S. The cheese’s Swiss origin is sometimes referred to as “Swiss DNA,” highlighting its connection to Swiss cheese-making methods.

American cheese is technically not real cheese. Interestingly, American cheese cannot technically be classified as “cheese.” It is a blend of milk, milk fats, whey protein concentrate, and preservatives. According to Cheese.com, it is officially termed “pasteurized process cheese food,” a far cry from pure cheese.
