An astronomer has been left confused after filming a mysterious object crossing the moon’s surface.

This unusual sighting was caught on camera by Dr. Sebastian Voltmer, a scientific photographer.

The footage has raised questions, and despite his expertise, Voltmer can’t explain what he saw.

Astronomer , Dr. Sebastian Voltmer captured an unexplained object in front of the Moon

On social media, Dr. Sebastian Voltmer (@sebastianvoltmer) shared a video on Instagram showing unexplained object in front of the Moon

The video has the caption: “Did you see the fast bright object in front of the moon? Go follow our SpaceStudio and you can win a telescope.”

On 16 March, Voltmer was filming the moon using a C11 telescope.

He was focused on the moon’s surface when a “fast, bright object” suddenly darted across the frame.

Voltmer initially assumed it might be a satellite or space station, but the object’s speed seemed unusual.

Could it be a satellite, meteor, or something else?

Voltmer’s video quickly went viral and sparked debate on social media,

In the comment selection, many viewers of the video speculated that the object was a meteor.

While some commenters suggested it could be space debris or a satellite, others entertained the idea of a UFO.

However, the mystery remains unsolved, and the object’s true nature is still up for debate.

One person said: That’s the golf ball I hit at top golf.

A second wrote: its oddly thin and bright so im assuming a small satellite within close range of the earth since its faster than the iss by a decent margin

While a third commented: Wow man! If it’s not the ISS could it be another satellite or?….aliens?

Another added: It transited faster than the ISS typically would, so it’s an object that is a little closer?

Someone else said: No one gonna talk about the green light at the bottom of the right crater???

However, Voltmer quickly ruled this out due to the absence of the characteristic tail seen with meteors. Additionally, the International Meteor Organization reported no records of a shooting star at the time of the sighting.

Voltmer also dismissed the possibility that the object was just dirt or a fly near the camera lens. He noted that based on the focus plane, the object had to be at least 500 meters away.

Dr. Voltmer suggests the object was in low earth orbit

Voltmer speculated that the object could have been in low Earth orbit, estimating its altitude to be between 100 and 200 kilometers. Planetary scientist Iliot Sefton-Nash shared a similar opinion, suggesting that the object resembled a series of low-Earth orbit satellites.

Sefton-Nash speculated that the object might have been part of a group of Starlink satellites. These satellites often travel in phased orbits, meaning several of them can pass in quick succession. Despite various theories, the object’s identity remains unclear.
