On social media, discussions about theories for lifting the Titanic wreckage have gained significant attention.
On Reddit, a user left viewers stunned by questioning some of the truly outlandish theories proposed to recover the Titanic.
Additionally, many online commenters suggested some of the most bizarre strategies for raising the infamous wreck from the ocean floor.
The Titanic disaster.
The Titanic, hailed as the “unsinkable” ship, met its tragic end on April 15, 1912.
After striking an iceberg during its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York, the vessel sank into the icy waters of the North Atlantic.
Of the 2,224 passengers and crew on board, over 1,500 lost their lives. The disaster shocked the world, revealing severe flaws in safety measures and leading to significant changes in maritime regulations. The Titanic remains a poignant symbol of human error and the limits of technology.
After the catastrophic disaster, the Titanic lay at the bottom of the ocean forever. Many ideas were proposed by scientists to recover the sunken Titanic from the ocean floor. However, bringing the wreckage back was considered an impossible task.
Nevertheless, numerous strategies were devised to find a way to resurface the ship, which left many people astonished.
Strategies to lift the Titanic wreckage
Arthur Hickey proposed a plan to lift the Titanic wreckage using ice.
In the 1970s, Arthur Hickey, an unemployed haulage contractor from Walsall, England, proposed that the Titanic could be lifted by encasing it in ice. The idea was that if an iceberg could sink the Titanic, it might be able to un-sink it as well. Hickey estimated that half a million tons of liquid nitrogen would be required to achieve this, a calculation that rendered the plan impractical and unfeasible.
Reddit user proposes lifting Titanic wreckage with Ping Pong Balls
On the Reddit platform, a user proposed a plan to lift the Titanic wreckage by pumping it full of ping pong balls.
Another user, known as @ediaGoneVintage, gained traction by suggesting this unconventional method to raise the Titanic from the ocean floor.
The post has the caption:” TIL that one of the strategies proposed for raising the Titanic before it fully deteriorates was to fill it full of ping pong balls.”
Well, this is one of the more peculiar ideas was to fill the Titanic with hundreds of thousands of ping pong balls.
However, this plan was quickly dismissed after experts pointed out that the immense pressure at the wreck’s depth would crush the balls before they could have any effect.
The post quickly went viral and sparked debate on social media.
In the comments, many users were baffled by the suggestion of using ping pong balls to lift the Titanic from the ocean floor. While others were intrigued by this unconventional strategy. One person said: Donald Duck and his nephews hard at work.
A second wrote: And the great thing is, Mythbusters did it—and it worked!
While a third commented: Gonna say, pretty sure this was cribbed from an old Donald Duck comic.
Someone else said: The ideas of bringing it to the surface are too focused on raising it. My proposal is to sink it more until it pops out of the other side
Using Vaseline to lift the Titanic wreckage
Another outlandish suggestion involved slathering the Titanic with Vaseline. This idea was based on the premise that Vaseline, as a dry floatant, could help the ship float.
However, to lift a vessel weighing 52,310 tons, it was estimated that 180,000 tons of Vaseline would be needed—an amount that was both impractical and economically unviable.
Additionally, some theories suggested using balloons and magnets to lift the Titanic wreckage.
Shortly after the Titanic sank, an architect from Denver, England, proposed using magnets to raise the ship. He even suggested combining balloons with magnets to achieve the lift.
Despite the creative approach, the high cost and complexity of this method make it unfeasible.
