According to Daily Mail, A freight train has caused a fright in Montana after derailing into the Yellowstone River. The collapse of the bridge resulted leading to sections of the train, potentially including cars carrying hazardous material, plunging into the water below.
Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte said Saturday on Twitter. “I’m monitoring the train derailment in Stillwater County, and the state is standing by to support as Montana Rail Link and county officials assess their needs."
Montana Rail Link, which operates the train, said in a statement that "several carriages containing hazardous materials" fell into the river. There have been no reports of injuries.
The company said the carriages contained molten bitumen and sulfur, substances that solidify quickly at low temperatures.
Two freight cars transporting sodium bisulfate, an acid salt, did not fall into the water, and an initial air quality assessment showed the chemical did not escape, according to the Montana State Railroad.
Many local, state, and federal agencies are working together to determine what caused the train to derail. Authorities were "unsure" what happened first - the derailment or the collapse of the bridge, according to local media reports.
