Canadian safety regulators and US Coast Guard will investigate fatal implosion of Titan submersible

On June 23, Canadian and U.S. officials launched an investigation into the undersea explosion of the tourist submersible Titan, which killed all five people on board. The accident showed that expeditions have long been unsafe.

The Titan submersible with five passengers on board went missing while touring the wreck of the Titanic. A robotic diving vehicle found a piece of wreckage from the Titan submersible on the floor of the North Atlantic on June 22, ending a five-day international rescue operation.

On June 18, after the Titan dived into the water, about 1 hour and 45 minutes later, contact with the mother ship was lost.

The urgent search continued for 5 days. The commander of the U.S. Coast Guard, Rear Admiral  John Mauger, said that until the wreckage of the wreck was scattered on the sea floor nearly about 1,600 feet (488 meters) from the bow of the Titanic wreck.

Speaking to the media, Mr. John Mauger, said the debris showed "a catastrophic implosion of the vehicle," at the time when the nearly 22-foot-long vessel was crushed under the extreme pressure at such depths.

On Friday, authorities in Canada and the US each announced the launch of investigations into the implosion of the submersible destined for the Titanic, which resulted in the tragedy that killed all five passengers.

The agency announced in a statement: “The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is launching an investigation into the fatal occurrence involving the Canadian-flagged vessel Polar Prince and the privately operated submersible Titan."

According to the CCN, the investigations launched by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada and the US Coast Guard would be one single investigation or two separate, or two distinct and parallel examinations.

According to the officials, the investigators were still searching the ocean floor for clues regarding the 'catastrophic implosion' that led to the loss of communication between the Titan submersible and its mother ship, Polar Prince, last weekend.

According to Mahoney, in order to recover anything from the debris field, a larger operation in collaboration with Deep Energy, another company assisting with the mission. The debris will likely be too heavy for Pelagic’s ROV,  which the Pelagic's ROV alone would likely be unable to lift. The proposed recovery efforts would involve using rigged cabling to pull up any debris.

Sohnlein told CNN on Friday morning, “There are teams on site that are still going to be collecting data for the next few days, weeks, maybe months, and it’s going to be a long time before we know exactly what happened down there,” He continued, “So I would encourage us to hold off on speculation until we have more data to go on.”

Mauger stated that officials have not reached a definitive conclusion regarding the exact timing of the catastrophic implosion, whether the devastating implosion occurred at the moment the submersible's loss of communication was approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes into its dive.
