Conspiracy theorists are buzzing after a “gigantic doorway” was discovered in Antarctica via Google Maps, sparking wild speculations.
Recently, a curious image appeared on Google Maps. It shows what some believe to be a “gigantic doorway” in the Antarctic ice.
This discovery has sparked a wave of wild theories among conspiracy enthusiasts.
A “Gigantic doorway” found in Antarctica via Google Maps
The location is near the Showa Station, which is a Japanese research outpost in East Antarctica.
Users on social media quickly began sharing the coordinates of the site.
The specific coordinates are 69°00’50″S 39°36’22″E. Many people were intrigued by this unusual sight.
On the Internet, the theories began to flow quickly.
Some users joked that the doorway could be Bigfoot’s vacation home. Others humorously suggested it might be a spaceship from “Star Trek.”
These ideas, while entertaining, are far from scientific.
Superman’s fortress of solitude, one user said.
I guess it’s a warm home of Bigfoot, the second user commented.
The tv series, “Ancient Aliens” documented the strange extraterrestrial activity in the Artics.
Credible eye witness accounts (Navy Seal and Navy Air Corps) testify to what is happening in the Article regions at this moment, the third user said.
It’s a secret Whirlpool refrigerator factory, another joked.
Its the door of a Boeing aircraft, of course! Someone guessed.
Experts addressed the theories
John Smellie, a volcanologist from the University of Leicester, commented on the situation.
He expressed amusement at the various suggestions circulating online. He noted how creative people can be when it comes to conspiracy theories.
However, scientists have stepped in to provide a more grounded explanation.
Experts believe this so-called “doorway” is not what it seems.
Bethan Davies, a glaciologist at the University of Newcastle, studied the area using Google Earth Pro.
She explained that the structure was likely an iceberg. This iceberg has become grounded and is melting in place.
Davies pointed out that fast sea ice and shallow waters characterize the region. She noted that many other icebergs fill the area.
Therefore, the appearance of a “doorway” is simply a natural formation.
“This is an iceberg that became grounded and is now stuck and melting out [in place],” Davies explained. “You can see many other icebergs in the area.”
Professor Martin Siegert from Imperial College London also weighed in.
He confirmed that the structure results from the ice flow around a solid obstacle beneath the ice. This flow is influenced by melting and the winds in the area.
Siegert explained that the ice is relatively thin, which allows the bedrock to affect how the ice moves.
He stated that the pattern seen in the ice is interesting but not unusual.
“This is simply ice flow around a solid subglacial obstacle, influenced also by melting and re-freezing of ice and by katabatic winds.
“The ice is quite thin here, as evidenced by other outcrops of rock nearby, so the influence of the bed on ice flow will be strong,” he continued.
“It’s an interesting pattern, but not unusual or surprising glaciologically.”
Smellie added that what appears to be a doorway is likely a rocky ridge. This ridge has been exposed due to the melting ice.
He mentioned that the snow around the “doorway” shows the direction of the wind. In light of these explanations, Smellie dismissed the conspiracy theories.
He said the whole idea of a doorway is a “weak and totally false” interpretation. He reassured everyone that it was simply a natural phenomenon.
Despite the scientific explanations, the fascination with the Antarctic structure continues.
