A couple was horrified to realize they had been drinking toilet water for six months due to their failure to pay the water bill.
A couple in Beijing, China, made a shocking discovery about their water supply. For six months, they unknowingly used toilet water for drinking, cooking, and bathing.
The mystery of the missing water bills
Mr. Tan and his girlfriend began renting their apartment in May, paying a steep CNY 10,000 ($1,400) monthly rent.
However, six months into their lease, they noticed something unusual. They hadn’t received a single water bill.
Despite the lack of billing, their water supply remained uninterrupted. Curious, Mr. Tan checked the water meter and noticed it increased when they ran the taps.
Unusual health issues raise concerns
During those six months, both tenants experienced worrying health problems. Mr. Tan developed acne and hair loss.
His girlfriend suffered from chest pains and a persistent cough. These symptoms pushed them to investigate further.
Plumbers reveal the disturbing truth
Mr. Tan eventually called in plumbers to inspect the water system. What they uncovered was alarming.
Hidden pipes under the floor and behind walls were allegedly connecting toilet water to their main water supply.
The couple had unknowingly been drinking and using this contaminated water for daily activities like showering and cooking.
Building company responds to the allegations
The apartment management company denied full responsibility.
They explained that residents are offered two water supply options:
1. Drinking water.
2. Well water, intended only for flushing toilets or watering plants.
The company stated that the well water had passed quality checks in March. However, they admitted the issue could stem from improperly adjusted valves.
Mr. Tan and his girlfriend claim they were never informed about the dual water system.
The couple is now seeking damages for the physical and emotional distress caused by the ordeal. Talks between the couple and the building management are ongoing.
