A customer became emotional after being charged $2,000 due to a cafe employee’s mistake in posting their credit card information.

A customer left her card behind at a cafe restaurant

A lady named Rhonda Deaver found herself in distress when she received a bill of around $2,000 after a mishap caused by a cafe worker.

Rhonda, a regular patron at Smith’s Cafe in North Carolina, experienced a troubling incident during a visit on April 30.

After a doctor’s appointment, she inadvertently left her card behind when settling the bill.

Upon realizing her mistake, a bank representative informed Rhonda, prompting her swift return to the cafe.

A cafe employee unintentionally posted Deaver’s credit card information on social media

In the meantime, an employee, in an attempt to reunite the card with its owner, posted about it on the cafe’s Facebook page.

The caption of the post read: “Hey guys Mrs Rhonda Deaver you’ve left your debit card here at the store we have placed it in a secure location please if you know her let her know we have it and would love to make sure it’s returned!!”

However, the well-intentioned act took a turn for the worse.

The employee shared images of the front and back of the credit card on the ‘Word of Mouth Kinston’ Facebook group.

They were trying to identify the owner of the card.

This inadvertent move exposed Rhonda’s sensitive details, including the bank account number, sort code, and security code, to the public eye.

Despite the intention of ensuring the card’s safety, the employee’s actions inadvertently led to severe repercussions for Rhonda.

When interviewed, Rhonda expressed her disbelief over the situation.

She felt distressed, fearing she might be held accountable for the large charges.

Some charges were declined after Rhonda reclaimed her card, but many had already been processed.

Unfortunately, this happened before she could close the account linked to those charges.

Rhonda lives on a fixed income, making it hard for her to pay unexpected bills.

After her card details were shared online, she faced charges of about $2,000.

She felt overwhelmed and unable to cover the costs that arose from these unauthorized charges.

“I couldn’t believe that they did that, but I was sick, thinking I might be responsible for all those charges,” she said.

Mereditch Radford from the Better Business Bureau highlighted the dangers of sharing card information on social media.

She warned against such practices, even if the card numbers are obscured.

Radford advised that it is safer to cancel the compromised card and obtain a new one to prevent potential financial harm.

She added: “Even if it is to find the person, it’s easy enough to cancel your credit card and get a new one with your company, that’s not worth it.”

Hope the employee was fired for their stupidity and the bank reverses the charges, one user said.

I think all those people that took her CC info and charged should be charged with theft as well. They knowningly knew it wasn’t their information, the second user commented.
