On social media, many viewers stunned after a viral video showing a doctor warned about the health risks of sleeping on yellow pillow.
On tiktok, a doctor explained why you should not sleep on a yellow pillow if you don’t want to risk your health.
A doctor has issued a warning to those who continue to sleep on yellow, discolored pillows.
The warning showed potential health risks associated with using pillows that have yellowed over time.
Why you should replace your pillow sooner
Most pillows need to be replaced every one to two years. However, if your pillow has turned yellow, it may be time to replace it earlier. A yellow pillow is not only unappealing but may also pose health risks.
On social media, a doctor who goes by @rubin_allergy shared a video on TikTok explaining that you should replace your pillow sooner to avoid risking your health.
This revelation may change many people’s habits and their views on maintaining a clean bedroom at the right time to ensure good health.
The doctor revealed the health risks of yellow pillo
In the footage with the caption: “If your pillow is yellow and lumpy, why are you keeping it? It may pose a health risk.”, Dr. Rubin, an expert on allergies and skin health, explains that yellow pillows can cause various health problems.
“It poses some health problems when you keep a pillow for years on end and you see that yellowing,” he explained.
“Even if you have a pillow case over it, the oils from your skin can get through the pillow case and over time stain the pillow, create some odd smells and it could increase the risk of having mould and dust mite allergens on them, making your allergy, asthma and potentially eczema symptoms worse.
“Therefore, depending on the type of pillow and its quality you may be able to get one to five years out of that pillow before you actually have to change it.”
Over time, the oils from your skin seep through the pillowcase and stain the pillow.
This buildup can create unpleasant odors and increase the risk of mold and dust mites. These allergens can worsen symptoms of asthma, allergies, and eczema.
Dr. Rubin recommends replacing your pillow after one to five years, depending on its quality. If you notice worsening allergy symptoms, it’s time for a new pillow.
Social media reaction
In the comment section, many viewers expressed their shock at Rubin’s revelation.
Some admitted that they hadn’t changed their yellow pillow in a long time. However, others suggested that the yellow pillow helped them sleep well, so they preferred to keep it instead of changing it too soon.
One person said: I wash my pillows, with detergent and beach during the summer so I can dry them outside in the sun. Turn out white and disinfected.
A second wrote: I wash my pillows weekly with my bedding. They aren’t yellow nor will they ever be. I couldn’t imagine bringing a girl home and her seeing yellow pillows peeking out of the cases
While a third commented: Wash the pillows twice a year and put a pillow protector on under the pillow case. I just gave my mother my two feather pillows that I’ve had for a few years and they weren’t yellow, wash really well and still plump up.
Another added: I thought once the pillows got that yellow and started walking by themselves then that’s when you knew when to change them, normally once a decade or two.
Someone else said: That’s my emotional support pillow
How to prolong the lifepan of your pillow
You could be extend your pillow’s lifespan by using a zippered pillow protector that’s dustproof.
Additionallu, you regularly wash the pillowcase to keep the pillow clean and free from oils.
Some pillows can even be machine-washed, depending on the material.
If you experience allergy flare-ups, it might be a sign that your pillow needs replacing.
What causes your pillow to turn yellow?
Yellowing occurs from natural body fluids, such as sweat, saliva, and oils from your skin and hair. If you follow a nightly skincare routine, lotions and creams can also contribute to the discoloration. These substances soak into the pillow, causing it to turn yellow over time.
While a yellow pillow may feel comfortable, it can have serious health implications. For better sleep and improved health, replace your pillow regularly, and consider using a dustproof cover to protect it from allergens.
