A DoorDash customer recently found themselves in a baffling situation when their delivery driver held their food hostage until they agreed to a higher tip.
DoorDash driver demands $20 tip before delivering order
On social media, a Reddit user, known as u/spark687, shared their unsettling experience on the r/doordash thread.
The post read: “It was getting late and I was hungry so I placed an order from a place 5 mies away. To make up for the drive, I made sure to tip $12. After an hour goes by, I see my dasher is waiting in a spot. I was a bit confused, until I opened our chat and saw he was demanding I “pay” him to actually deliver it. I reported and canceled the order. I’m a dasher as well, so I know he had the option to decline. Isn’t $12 good for a tip? Why’s he asking for more? ”
In the post, the customer had placed an order from a restaurant located five miles away and decided to tip $12 to compensate for the drive. However, after an hour had passed, they noticed that their delivery driver, referred to as “Ryan,” was still stationary.
Upon checking the chat, the customer found several messages from the driver. The initial message read: “Ryan I hope that u tipping good cuz I came all the way from [redacted] to you.” A subsequent message demanded: “How much that you tipping me before I go farther?”
Customer’s response after being asked for a $20 tip before delivering the order
The customer responded by confirming the $12 tip, only to receive a counter-demand from the driver: “You should pay me $20 don’t be cheap.”
Feeling frustrated, the customer reported the driver and canceled the order, citing their own experience as a dasher and noting that the driver had the option to decline the delivery if they were unhappy with the tip.
The post quicly went viral and sparked debate on social media.
In the comments section, many viewers expressed outrage and support for the customer. Some argued that they do not tip delivery drivers, suggesting that drivers should be paid adequately for their work,
One person said: Report them. As a driver myself, this shit is gross.
A second wrote: This one is particularly egregious. $20? Not just asking but actually holding food hostage?
While a third commented: Why does it feel like something like this should be illegal. Taking someone’s money, then holding their property hostage until you pay more.
Another added: For 5 miles, $12 is great. Dude is being ridiculous.Someone else said: First off $12 is a damn fine tip in the first place. Bugging you and like holding your order hostage is Fing ridiculous.
