On Twitter, the study pointed out that many struggle with the pronunciation of Mercedes, having pronounced it wrong their entire lives.

While, many drivers are only now discovering they’ve mispronounced the name of this iconic car brand.

Mercedes is renowned for its luxury and style, yet a surprising number of people struggle with its pronunciation.

The origin of the Mercedes name

Mercedes was founded in 1926 by Karl Benz, Gottlieb Daimler, Wilhelm Maybach, and Emil Jellinek. Jellinek named the brand after his daughter, Mercedes.

Little did they know that their company would grow into a major player in the automotive industry.

A study pointed out many mispronunciations of the name Mercedes.

A study by Saga Car Insurance revealed a shocking truth: it found that only 20% of participants pronounced ‘Mercedes’ correctly, with most people saying ‘Mer-say-deez,’ while others debated various versions on Reddit

Some users suggested “Mair-they-dayth” and “Mur-Say-Deez.” However, one comment nailed the correct pronunciation: “The correct German way to pronounce it is Mertz-saydez.”

The key distinction lies in the “Mertz” sound, which is often overlooked.

Ccontroversy over the pronunciation of the name Mercede

On social media, a recent video featuring Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius sparked debate about the brand’s name.

He pronounced “Mercedes” in a way that some found unauthentic. The video highlighted the brand’s history and confirmed that it was named after Jellinek’s daughter.

Despite the pronunciation issues, Mercedes remains a highly recognized brand. The same Saga survey showed that the Mercedes logo is the second most recognized among car brands.

Fifty percent of participants could accurately recall the brand’s three-point star logo.

Additionally, an impressive 88% of those who attempted to draw it did so correctly. Surprisingly, 83% of Brits could spell “Mercedes-Benz” correctly.
