Why you should never get common item at breakfast buffet?

According to an expert in the field, there is a compelling reason why you should avoid a certain common item at breakfast buffets

The expert explains that these items, such as jam, peanut butter, marmalade, and marmite, have a higher likelihood of being contaminated.

This is primarily due to the nature of their storage and the potential for people to directly touch them with their fingers.

The expert, a microbiologist named Jay Tetro based in Alberta, emphasizes that condiments with a short shelf life should be particularly avoided.

When these condiments are left open and accessible to multiple individuals, there is a significant chance of cross-contamination occurring.

Tetro points out that if people can freely dip their fingers or utensils into these condiments, the risk of contamination increases substantially.

The reasons behind this potential contamination lie in how people typically handle condiments.

Even with the intention of practicing good hygiene, individuals may not thoroughly wash their hands before touching these shared food items.

As a result, bacteria can easily transfer from one person to another, ultimately leading to health risks.

According to experts, when it comes to holiday buffets, certain foods should be avoided. Among the "worst" choices are fried potatoes, pre-cooked breakfast meats, and fruit salads.

On the other hand, opting for safer options like smoked salmon, cheese, or fresh fruit can ensure a healthier breakfast experience.

Futhermore, the expert also advise against consuming hot continental breakfast items such as eggs and waffles served at hotels.

How can we avoid issues related to food safety?

To minimize the chances of falling victim to such contamination, the expert advises looking for individually wrapped condiments.

By opting for packaged options, you can ensure that no one has had direct contact with the product before you.

This added layer of protection significantly reduces the risk of bacteria or other contaminants being present.

Additionally, to avoid the many issues related to food safety, it is recommended to select accommodations that offer a customized breakfast.

Opting for establishments with a station where your food is prepared right in front of you, such as an omelet station, can reduce the likelihood of experiencing food poisoning.
