After refusing to compete against a transgender athlete, a female fencer breaks her silence, facing criticism and accusations of bigotry.
A female fencer named Stephanie Turner has recently made headlines after she refused to compete against a transgender athlete at a tournament.
This decision led to her disqualification and sparked a heated debate about gender identity in sports. In her statement, Turner expressed her views and explained her actions.
A female fencer refused to compete against trans opponent
The incident occurred on March 30 during a USA Fencing-sanctioned tournament in Maryland. Stephanie Turner was set to face Redmond Sullivan, a transgender athlete.

Before the match began, Turner took a knee as a form of protest. She stated that she could not compete against Sullivan, whom she referred to in a way that did not acknowledge Sullivan’s preferred pronouns.
This action resulted in a black card being issued to Turner, leading to her disqualification from the event.
Female fencer speaks out after her disqualification for refusing to compete against trans opponent
In interviews following the disqualification, Turner explained her reasoning. She claimed that competing against a transgender woman gave her an unfair athletic disadvantage.
Turner stated, “There’s nothing for me, and there’s everything for him.”
“Because I have no choice as a woman, as a female, in where I compete. I am a woman, and I have an athletic disadvantage to men.”

“When I took the knee, I looked at the ref and I said, ‘I’m sorry, I cannot do this. I am a woman, and this is a man, and this is a women’s tournament. And I will not fence this individual.’”
She believes that as a female athlete, she faces challenges that her transgender opponent does not. Turner emphasized her identity as a woman and expressed her concerns about fairness in women’s sports.
“He doesn’t understand what’s happening. He asks, ‘Are you OK?’ And I said, ‘I’m sorry. I have much love and respect for you, but I will not fence you.’
“Redmond says to me, ‘Well, you know, there is a member on the board of directors here who supports me, and there is a policy that acknowledges me as a woman, so I am allowed to fence, and you will get black carded,’ and I said, ‘I know.’”

Turner’s protest and subsequent disqualification drew significant attention online. Footage of the incident was widely shared, accumulating millions of views.
Many people expressed their opinions on social media, with some supporting Turner and others condemning her actions.
Critics labeled her a bigot for her refusal to compete, while supporters praised her for standing up for what she believes.
The role of USA Fencing
USA Fencing, the governing body for the sport in the United States, responded to the incident by stating that Turner violated the rules.
The organization clarified that all athletes must compete under the same guidelines, regardless of gender identity.
According to their policies, athletes who transition from male to female may compete in women’s events after completing specific hormone therapy requirements.
“USA Fencing’s responsibility is to ensure that all athletes, regardless of their personal positions, compete under the same rules established by our international federation,” the statement reads.
“According to the FIE (International Fencing Federation) Technical Rules, specifically Article t.113, a fencer is not permitted to refuse to fence another properly entered fencer for any reason.
“Under these rules, such a refusal results in disqualification and the corresponding sanctions. This policy exists to maintain fair competition standards and preserve the sport’s integrity.”

The discussion surrounding transgender athletes in sports is complex and ongoing.
Supporters of inclusion argue that all athletes should have the right to compete in accordance with their gender identity.
They believe that sports should be inclusive and accessible to everyone. Opponents, however, raise concerns about fairness and safety, particularly for cisgender women competing against transgender women.
“We respect the viewpoints on all sides and encourage our members to continue sharing them with us as the matter evolves.
“It’s important for the fencing community to engage in this dialogue, but we expect this conversation to be conducted respectfully, whether at our tournaments or in online spaces.
“The way to progress is by respectful discussion based on evidence.”

Martina Navratilova’s support
The controversy surrounding Turner’s actions gained further traction when tennis legend Martina Navratilova expressed her support for Turner on social media.
Navratilova criticized USA Fencing for their policies and voiced her concerns regarding fairness in women’s sports.
She wrote: “This is what happens when female athletes protest! Anyone here still thinks this is fair??? I am fuming… and shame on @USAFencing, shame on you for doing this. How dare you throw women under the gender bulls*** bus!!!”
Her comments added to the already heated debate, as many fans and followers rallied behind both Turner and Navratilova.
