The Duke and duchess of sussex visit wildfire victims in Los Angeles
Harry and Meghan visited Los Angeles to support victims of devastating wildfires. It marked their first public appearance together in 145 days.
Meghan Markle hugged victims and first responders at a Pasadena evacuation center last Friday. Prince Harry watched on, visibly moved.
Their previous public appearance was in August during their Colombia tour. In Cali, the couple was seen smiling, clapping, and dancing.
Supporting evacuees at Pasadena shelter
On January 10, the Sussexes visited a shelter in Pasadena. They mingled with volunteers and Pasadena’s mayor, Victor Gordo.
Meghan hugged a woman on camera, and both appeared distressed as they listened to victims’ stories.
Their Archewell Foundation donated to the LA wildfires appeal, providing clothing, children’s items, and other essentials.
The couple also opened their Montecito mansion to friends and loved ones evacuated due to nearby fires.
Balancing individual and joint public appearances
Insiders describe a ‘twin track’ approach to public appearances. Harry and Meghan increasingly pursue separate causes.
In December, Harry attended a New York media summit alone. He addressed rumors about his marriage, dismissing speculation:
“We’ve apparently divorced 10, 12 times. It’s hard to keep up. I feel sorry for the trolls.”
Meanwhile, Meghan attended a gala in Los Angeles with Tyler Perry.
The couple’s joint tours in 2024 included Jamaica, Nigeria, and Canada to promote the Invictus Games.
Meghan’s Netflix series and return to Instagram
Meghan is filming her Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, which features Harry. Its release was delayed due to the wildfires.
She also returned to Instagram after a six-year hiatus, sharing a tribute to her late dog, Guy. Intimate moments with Harry and their children were included.
Criticism and praise for wildfire support
Some criticized Harry and Meghan’s involvement as ‘disaster tourism.’ Actress Justine Bateman accused them of using the crisis for publicity.
Others defended their efforts, highlighting their positive impact on morale. Mayor Gordo described them as “great people” with “great personalities.”
The Sussexes distributed food parcels at the Pasadena Convention Center evacuation site. They hugged World Central Kitchen’s founder, José Andrés, who is providing hot meals to victims.
Visiting fire-damaged areas and offering support
Harry and Meghan toured burnt-out homes in Pasadena and Altadena. They spoke with victims and expressed deep concern.
Mayor Gordo praised their efforts: “They want to be as helpful as they can and are very caring people.”
The fires have claimed 24 lives and scorched nearly 14,000 acres. The LA Medical Examiner reported fatalities in the Palisades and Eaton Fire zones.
Between 4,000 to 5,000 structures, including celebrity homes, have been damaged or destroyed. The Sussexes continue to offer support amid this crisis.
