The new passport of Hunter Schafer lists her as male, sparking debate over policy changes and their impact on transgender rights.
Transgender actress Hunter Schafer recently revealed that her new passport identifies her as male.
The news sparks debate on transgender rights and government policies’ impact on trans lives.
Schafer, known for her role in the hit series “Euphoria,” shared a video on social media showing her passport, which lists her gender as male.

Hunter Schafer speaks out about passport listing male as her gender
In her video, Schafer expressed her frustration with the situation.
She held up her passport, clearly displaying the letter “M” under the sex category.
Despite being a well-known transgender woman, she found it disheartening that her official documents do not reflect her gender identity.
This incident comes in the wake of new policies from the current presidential administration that have caused concern among the transgender community.

Schafer spoke openly about her feelings regarding the situation.
She acknowledged her privilege as a white, thin trans woman who fits within societal beauty standards.
“I want to acknowledge my privilege, not only as a celebrity transwoman who is white and thin and can adhere to contemporary beauty standards
and I can participate in all of that, and I pass, and it still happened,” Schafer, 26, said.
“I never had my birth certificate changed, so this has led me to believe that I think the agencies who were interested in passports are now required to cross reference birth certificates.
“I don’t know exactly what, or what changed in far of the processing goes.”

However, she emphasized that even with her advantages, she still faced challenges.
“It’s been about a decade since I changed my gender marker,” she stated.
“This is the first time an official document hasn’t recognized that.”
“I also want to say, I don’t give a f–ck that they put a M on my passport,” she reiterated.
“It doesn’t change really anything about me or my transness, however it does make life a little harder.”
She pointed out that the agencies responsible for issuing passports may now be required to check birth certificates when processing applications.
This could lead to complications for many transgender individuals who have not had their birth certificates updated.

Impact on the trans community
Schafer also reflected on how this situation affects others in the transgender community.
She mentioned that such bureaucratic issues can create unnecessary difficulties in daily life.
Travelers may face discomfort and stress explaining their gender identity to border control agents.
“Personally, I mean I haven’t tested it out yet, I’ll found out next week when I have to travel abroad with my passport,
but I’m pretty sure it’s going to come along with having to out myself to like border patrol agents and that whole gig much more often that I would like to or is really necessary.”
The actress still stands firm on her belief: “Trans people are beautiful. We are never going to stop existing, I am never going to stop being trans, a letter on a passport can’t change that.”

Reactions from the public
Following her announcement, social media was filled with reactions.
Many users expressed their support for Schafer, emphasizing that transgender people are valid and deserve recognition.
One user said: It’s paper. People have been dealing with this kind of thing forever.
You are who you are, no matter what the paper says, no matter what the people holding power say. The people in your life who matter will support you.
The second user added: There are a lot of people who would like to have your passport and live in the USA. Everything is a matter of perspective.
The third user wrote: A lot of these comments are rude and hateful. What does everyone care whether she identifies with being a male or female?
It’s not contagious you bigoted, fearful haters on here. Live and let live.
Another user said: All the comments here are so hateful. It’s filled with ignorance and prejudice. Get an education all of you.
However, not all responses were positive.
Some comments were critical, arguing that a passport should reflect biological sex rather than gender identity.
One user claimed: You can’t change biology. Once a male always a male!
The second user said: The law is not supposed to reflect your beliefs.
The third user commented: Kids also think they are Batman but they grow out of it.
Another user wrote: I cut my dogs balls off, but that doesn’t make him a girl
