The scam unfolded when the impersonator deceived the Facebook user.

The victim, a 74-year-old woman, believed she was in a genuine relationship with Musk.

She communicated with the impersonator regularly, thinking he was a friend.

Moynihan reportedly contacted her through Facebook and maintained the deception for several months.

Detective Jim Curulla, part of the Elder Fraud Unit in the Bradenton Police Department, explained that the woman was led to believe she could invest in Musk’s business ventures.

“She really thought she was friends with him, and she’d communicate with him on a daily basis with him,” he said.

“What and who you see is not who is typing back to you,” he warned.

“It’s vital to be careful and not to send money or get involved in business deals with someone online.”

He concluded: “You can’t start going into a business dealing with someone over the internet.”

Moynihan’s defense claimed he was unaware of any fraudulent activity.

Upon his arrest, Moynihan claimed that he was not solely responsible for the scam.

He alleged that his girlfriend was the mastermind behind the operation and that he had little involvement.

However, police are investigating his role in the fraud and whether he acted alone or with accomplices.

“Mr. Monihyan said his girlfriend is the mastermind behind it, and he had no involvement.” Detective Curulla said.

Rising threat of online scams involving the impersonation of celebrities

This case indicates a growing issue with online scams, particularly those involving impersonation of high-profile individuals.

Scammers often use the names of celebrities or well-known figures to gain trust and exploit unsuspecting victims.

The emotional and financial toll on victims, especially older adults, can be devastating.

In recent years, there has been an increase in reports of similar scams where individuals impersonate famous personalities to defraud people.

The internet can create a false sense of security.

This leads individuals to believe they are communicating with someone legitimate, when they are actually talking to a fraudster.
