Daisuke Hori, a 40-year-old man from Japan, has gained attention for his unusual sleeping habits.

For the past 12 years, he claims to have survived on only 30 to 40 minutes of sleep each day.

According to Hori, this drastic reduction in sleep has not only kept him energized but has also allowed him to “double” his lifespan.

Hori believes that his unique routine stems from training both his body and mind to function with minimal rest.

Hori’s sleep methods spark heated debate

He asserts that engaging in sports or drinking coffee before meals can help stave off drowsiness, allowing him to feel alert throughout the day.

This approach has reportedly freed up a significant amount of time for him to accomplish various tasks.

“As long as you do sports or drink coffee an hour before eating, you can stave off drowsiness,” he said.

In 2016, Hori founded the Japan Short Sleepers Training Association, where he teaches others about his sleeping philosophy.

He runs a YouTube channel called “Nature Sleep,” where he claims to have taught over 2,100 students his methods.

Hori emphasizes that high-quality sleep is more beneficial than long hours of sleep, particularly for those needing to stay focused in demanding jobs.

“People who need sustained focus in their work benefit more from high-quality sleep than long sleep.

For instance, doctors and firefighters have shorter rest periods but maintain high efficiency,” he said.

Despite his claims, experts strongly disagree with Hori’s philosophy.

The importance of sufficient sleep for health

The U.S. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) emphasizes that sleep is a fundamental human need.

Research indicates that adults should aim for seven to nine hours of sleep each night for optimal health.

A lack of adequate sleep can lead to serious physical and mental health issues, including memory decline, weakened immune function, and mood disorders.

Guo Fei, a neurologist at Huazhong University, warns that chronic sleep deprivation can significantly increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

“Adults are recommended to get seven to nine hours of sleep each day.

Sleep is an important period for the body and brain to recover and repair,” Guo Fei, a neurologist at Huazhong University of Science and Technology Xiehe Shenzhen Hospital said.

“Chronic sleep deprivation can lead to memory decline, weakened immunity, mood disorders, and an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases,” Guo added.
