A man tested durability of his Tesla by leaving it running for 12 hours in extreme -28-degree temperatures to see the results.

In a bold experiment, a YouTuber left his Tesla running for 12 hours in frigid temperatures of -28 degrees Celsius (-18 degrees Fahrenheit).

The test aimed to see how well the electric vehicle (EV) could handle extreme cold.

It also evaluated whether it could keep the cabin warm without draining the battery too quickly.

Man drives his Tesla for 12 hours while in temperatures of up to -28⁰C

The YouTuber, known as FrozenTesla, wanted to address common concerns about electric vehicles in cold weather.

Many potential EV buyers worry about how their cars will perform in freezing conditions, especially if they get stranded.

To simulate a potential emergency situation, he left his Tesla running overnight while using the heating system, heated seats, and even the entertainment system.

Starting with a battery charge of 67%, FrozenTesla activated the “Keep Climate” mode.

This feature helps maintain a comfortable temperature inside the car.

The goal was to see how well the vehicle could continue to function in such harsh weather conditions.

Battery usage of Tesla was monitored throughout the experiment.

Throughout the experiment, FrozenTesla checked the battery level every hour.

Despite running the heating and other power-consuming features, the battery only dropped by about 3.5% each hour.

After 12 hours, the battery level had decreased to 29%. This meant that the car had used nearly 40% of its charge during that time.

The YouTuber noted the battery usage in cold weather conditions. Even after extended use, enough battery remained to drive home.

This is an important consideration for anyone worried about getting stranded in extreme conditions.

Comparison with gasoline cars

Interestingly, FrozenTesla also calculated the cost of running the Tesla during this test.

Using the battery power for 12 hours cost approximately $3.58.

In contrast, running a traditional gasoline vehicle would have cost about $7.86 for the same duration, making the Tesla more economical in terms of keeping warm.

While gasoline cars can typically run longer while idling, the difference in cost highlights the efficiency of electric vehicles.

Many commenters on the video recognized this and noted that the Tesla performed better than they had expected in cold weather.

The video received a variety of reactions online.

Many viewers expressed relief that the Tesla held up well in such extreme temperatures.

One viewer even claimed that their Tesla was the best winter vehicle they had ever owned.

On the other hand, some skeptics remained unconvinced.

They voiced concerns about the overall reliability of electric vehicles in cold climates.

No. He left the heat on. So just a heat pump running for 12 hours from a big battery.

So test shows the heat pump works fine in -28 degrees from the battery. Which is great.

Next test most be drivning the car with heat on and see how long it lasts, one user said.

A tesla is “running” 24/7 anyway… I think they mean camp mode was used. You can camp in a tesla for days, the second user wrote.

Turn it off & see if it starts again in 24 hours that’s a test in -28 degrees, the third user commented.

How can you let Tesla to run?. Mine run as long it moves. Then it shuts mainly down.

You can leave heater and lights on but that is it. It will dry the battery evently.

As I leave my car, it shuts down. No energy is used from that point, another user said.
