Perhaps you’ve just left a night out, and a tasty kebab is all you desire.
After a long day at work, hunger strikes. You stroll down the dimly lit street, craving a doner kebab.
Most people don’t think about the ingredients when indulging in this delicious street food.
However, one man decided to dig deeper.
So sad, he vows that he will never eat kebab again after discovering the reality behind his favorite takeaway.
The factory showed how a doner kebab is made
In a Channel 4 Food Unwrapped investigation, Jimmy Doherty visits a kebab factory. He aims to uncover what goes into making doner kebabs.
At the factory, he discovers that authentic doner kebabs should be made solely of lamb.
The factory’s production involves mixing lamb with textured soya protein, onion powder, and salt.
This mixture is designed to bulk up the meat and make it easier to cut.
In the footage, a factory worker explained that the composition of their doner kebabs: 85% lamb, 5% bulker, 5% rusk, and 5% seasoning and salt.
However, not all kebab shops adhere to this standard.
The worker warns, “There are companies out there that are labelling up kebabs and they’re containing beef and chicken. There have been some instances of pork, which, for the Muslim community, is a big no-no.”
A man uncover grim truth about Doner Kebab production.
To investigate further, the team purchased nine doner kebabs from various locations, all claiming to be lamb.
They sent these samples to a DNA testing lab for analysis.
Forensic scientist Paul Hancock explains what they look for: Beef, pork, lamb, chicken, donkey, goat, and horse.
The results were alarming. Only one of the nine samples contained lamb exclusively. “There is only one doner kebab that is the real deal,” Doherty confirms.
Hancock adds, “Most of them contain chicken. We’ve also got a couple that contain beef. Fortunately, we found no goat, no donkey, and no horse in any of the products.”
However, he cautions that with more samples, he would expect a 60% failure rate to be typical.
