Mark Zuckerberg launches “vanish mode” on Facebook Messenger
In 2020, Facebook launched a feature called *Vanish Mode* on Facebook Messenger and Instagram.
This feature allowed users to send messages that would disappear after being seen.
It provided a way to have spontaneous, temporary conversations without leaving a permanent digital footprint.
Facebook described Vanish Mode as a tool for users to share in-the-moment messages without the worry of them sticking around.
Bridget Pujals, Messenger Product Manager, and Manik Singh, Instagram Product Manager, said:
“We designed Vanish Mode with safety and choice in mind, so you control your experience.”

Disappearing messages are now available in Facebook Messenger settings.
While Vanish Mode is no longer supported, Facebook has introduced a similar feature: Disappearing messages.
This option is gradually being rolled out to users, allowing them to send messages that disappear after a certain time frame.
To access disappearing messages, users need to click on the person’s name in a Messenger conversation, scroll down to *Privacy and Support*, and select *Disappearing Messages*.
Facebook warns that if a screenshot or screen recording is taken during these private conversations, the other party will receive a notification.

Mark Zuckerberg issues warning to Facebook users against taking screenshot chats
Zuckerberg took to Facebook to emphasize the importance of this privacy feature.
In his post, he emphasized a new update for encrypted Messenger chats.
This update will notify users if someone screenshots a disappearing message.
“If someone takes a screenshot or screen recording, a notification will appear in the chat,” he wrote.
He added that the update also includes fun elements like GIFs, stickers, and reactions for encrypted chats, making private conversations more interactive.

“We’re also adding GIFs, stickers, and reactions to encrypted chats too,” Zuckerberg wrote.
To demonstrate the feature, Zuckerberg shared a humorous exchange between himself and his wife, Priscilla Chan.
After making a joke about a supercomputer, Chan took a screenshot, triggering a notification that illustrates how the feature works in real time.
