Melissa has a history of making unique costumes for her son, Ellis. Last year, he dressed as Prince Harry, which received a lot of attention.

This year, when Ellis chose to go as Trump, Melissa was surprised but supportive.

She initially had another costume planned for him, inspired by the book “Aliens Love Underpants.” However, Ellis was adamant about his choice.

“He was always going to go to school in that. Trump was more as a joke between the Reception mums group and friends. Well this morning Ellis had other ideas.”

On the morning of World Book Day, Melissa faced a time crunch.

She had to get Ellis to school by 8 a.m., and he insisted on wearing the Trump costume instead of the alien outfit she had prepared.

Feeling a bit embarrassed, she asked her boyfriend to take him to school. Despite her initial feelings, she wanted Ellis to enjoy the day.

She continued: “We were against the clock. They have to be at school at 8am. He was adamant he wasn’t wearing the alien outfit and was going as Trump.

That was it. I asked my boyfriend to take him in as I was quite mortified.

Mixed reactions from family and friends

Melissa noted that reactions to the costume were mixed. While some family members were against the idea, other parents found it funny and encouraging.

Melissa explained: “My family were against the idea because of some of the nasty comments I received when Ellis was Harry…They did find it funny but were worried about the reaction.”

One mother even joked that her daughter could have gone as Melania Trump, adding to the light-hearted atmosphere among friends.

“Ellis’s friend’s mum said she should have gone as Melania. They all found the funny side.”

This support helped Melissa feel better about her decision.

Ellis has a strong fascination with America.

Ellis, who is five years old, has a fascination with American culture.

His interest grew after watching news segments with his sister, who was preparing for an exam. He expressed a desire to visit America someday.

Melissa mentioned that Ellis loves everything about the country, which influenced his choice of costume.

Melissa chose a book for costume inspiration.

In preparation for the costume, Melissa bought a book titled “Not Nice, Donny!” This book served as inspiration for Ellis’s outfit.

Although she doesn’t consider herself a fan of Trump, she acknowledged that the book is topical and can help children understand current events in an age-appropriate way.

“This is probably unnecessarily controversial, but the book I referred to is brilliant.

I guess it’s still topical and it’s important children know what’s going on in the world, provided it’s age-appropriate.”
