In July 2021, Fahad Badar embarked on a climb of Broad Peak in Pakistan.

During the expedition, he encountered life-threatening challenges.

One climber tragically died, while two others turned back due to altitude sickness.

Badar’s guide also retreated, leaving him alone to tackle the 8,047-meter summit.

After nearly 27 hours of continuous climbing, he found himself stranded at almost 8,000 meters.

Badar recounted, “I was almost dead but survived the night without oxygen, alone in the cold.” Hallucinations from low oxygen levels compounded his struggle as he navigated the extreme conditions.

Fortunately, Fahad was rescued from what seemed like certain death.

However, he suffered severe frostbite on his fingers. Four fingers on his left hand and one on his right were affected.

Despite seeking treatment, it was too late to save them.

Initially, Badar felt intense pain before his fingers went numb.

He described the devastating impact: “My fingers turned black and felt like rock.”

He shared videos online, illustrating the damage.

His fingers had become “fully mummified,” making it difficult for him to move them despite still being able to grasp objects.

Fahad realized that amputation was necessary to prevent infection from the necrotic tissue.

He explained, “If left untreated, my fingers may fall off by themselves.” The risk of infection made amputation the safer option.

Badar approached his situation with resilience. He noted, “I was already over it. It was almost two months after the incident.” He had navigated the five stages of grief and was focused on planning for his future. “There is no use in being sad or depressed; life goes on, and I am alive.”

The video quickly went viral and sparked debate on social media.
